This is a representative of the carp family of fish, used by some aquarists as a natural means of combating certain algae, whose existence in the aquarium is highly undesirable. Siamese algae are recognized as one of the most effective fish in their niche. These are the only fish that feed on red algae and give preference to young plants.
A distinctive feature of this type of aquarium fish is the presence of a characteristic black stripe running along the whole body of the algae: it starts at the tip of the fish's nose, and ends at the tail. It is worth noting that the body of this funny fish is long and barred. Its length on the outside can reach 16 cm, in captivity, the same whales grow to smaller sizes. The fins of the algae are almost transparent. If the fish scare, it loses its natural color, becoming light gray. The females of the Siamese algae are, as a rule, slightly fatter than the males.
Siamese seaweed - sanitary aquarium!
This fish has a unique ability to clean aquariums. For this, Siamese algae was called sanitary aquariums: experts believe that its presence in the aquarium is a must. And all thanks to the unique structure of the seaweed jaws: they have a pointed shape, so the fish easily scrapes the algae from the aquariums, from the plants and from the decorations in the tank. The most important thing in this is that the Siamese algae eaters do not do any harm to underwater plants!
The content of these fish in the aquarium suggests the presence of a huge number of plants in it. Otherwise, Siamese "whales" will eat all the available moss. The aquariums in which these fish will be kept should be rather large in size: as already noted, Siamese algae-eaters in nature grow to 16 cm, and in captivity up to 10-12 cm. These minke whales are funny fishes! What is worth watching their rest? Unlike other inhabitants of the aquarium, the algae sleep not on their stomachs, but fix their bodies in a raised position, leaning on the rear fins and tail.
It is quite simple to keep in captivity Siamese algae: this fish is unpretentious in food and care, it gets on well with other species of fish. It is curious that the algae does not harm other fish, they disturb the peace of the aquarium water only when they chase each other. It is worth noting that these fish need good aeration of the aquarium water: they naturally have weak breathing, because water is saturated with oxygen, they are vital. Only in this case, the Siamese Algae Eater will delight its owner with active behavior, funny habits and inexhaustible vitality!
Behavior in the aquarium
In the aquarium, the fish behaves restlessly, picks up in search of food, frolics with the rest of the flock. Sometimes there are harmless fights. During the games, the algae can jump out of the aquarium, so it's best to take care of the lid. It does not show aggression to other inhabitants of the aquarium and may even cling to schooling fish.
It is not recommended to keep several males in the pack, otherwise skirmishes are inevitable. Territorial fish, such as Labo, also do not fit. This neighborhood will end sadly for the Siamese. For veiling fish, the algae will not work either - the fins will be gnawed.
The SAE swim bladder is underdeveloped, so the fish will periodically need to rest. In order for her neighbors not to interfere, it is recommended to place various shelters: plants with large leaves, snags or grottoes.
Sexual dimorphism in the Siamese is weak. It is known that females have a more rounded abdomen.
Information on the reproduction of SAE in captivity is currently not available. All fish available commercially are caught from their natural habitat. In nature, the female spawn on the leaves of aquatic plants, and the male fertilizes her. Although the climate of the aquarium is not suitable for breeding algae, sometimes, when conditions are close to natural, the female can spawn. But, unfortunately, the males do not fertilize it, and failed parents eat clutch.
The mobile Siamese seaweed is a very useful inhabitant of the aquarium. First of all, he is a hardworking orderly, able to maintain a neat appearance of the walls and plants. At first it may seem inconspicuous, but if you look closely, you can easily notice a playful, active fish that will delight the owner with enthusiasm for about 10 years!
Cleaners of our aquariums, which are all, without exception, shrimp, eating up food particles, microscopic organisms, rotten leaves of aquarium plants.
Black Tiger Shrimp
Algae Snails and orderlies
Next, I would like to elaborate on some snails.
Snail Nritin "Zebra" "Neritina natalensis sp" Zebra "
Some aquarists call it a tiger snail. They say that you can not find two snails with the same ornament of the shell. The homeland of these snails is hot Africa.
Content temperature - 25-27 degrees Celsius, PH of 7.
The cover of the aquarium should be tightly closed, because there are shoots of snails from the aquarium. For a short time, this snail can live on land. Frequent attempts to leave the territory of the aquarium may indicate that the parameters of the water do not like the zebras. Zebras live in an aquarium for about 4-5 years, the size of the shell grows to 2-2.5 cm. In the aquarium, this snail does not reproduce.
The shell of this snail is decorated with spiral ribs and spikes. The size of the cochlea is 2-2.5 cm. Life expectancy in an aquarium is about 4 years. The optimum water temperature is 25-28 degrees, the pH is above 6.5.
Conditions of detention, dimensions are similar to the previous instance, the lower threshold of temperature may be 22 degrees.
All neretins are excellent cleaners of aquariums, they cleanly stele, large-leaved plants, stones, snags and decor from algal fouling. Moreover, aquarium plants do not damage at all. The only disadvantage of these snails - laying eggs on the glass aquarium.
This extremely slow snail is also called the snail-turtle. It belongs to the Neritidae family.
Related Names Septaria porcellana - Green Turtle Snail, Cellana toreuma, Neritia Crepidularia, Bourbon Nerite.
Dimensions septaria forforova from 1.5 to 3 cm. Conditions: temperature 22-26, PH from 6 to 7.5. Filtration, aeration, water changes are required. The life of the aquarium in the presence of food (algal fouling) is about 2 years.
This remarkable snail was first discovered in 1758. The homeland of the snail is Indonesia and the Philippines.
In addition to its slowness, this snail is distinguished by its unusual form of carapace - a flat form. Snails are of different genders, but breed only in brackish water, therefore reproduction of porcelain Septaria in a fresh-water aquarium is not possible.
The snail firmly sticks its foot to the surfaces. In no case can not try to tear it off, thus you can snatch the snail's leg, which will lead to its death. Rotational movements, very carefully, you can try to peel the snail from the glass.
Like the previous types of neretin, Septarium porcelain, is also an aquarium medic, and feeds on algal fouling. Excellent cleans the aquarium from algae, including from the Vietnamese. Does not damage plants. Gets along with all the peaceful fish and shrimps. Be careful with tetradonts, crayfish and other predators. I saw these snails in tsikhlidnik. They felt great, and the glass was already glistening with purity.
- without algae the snail can die from hunger!
- the snail is not able to move on sandy ground!
Here are the rave reviews of the happy owners of these snails:
“This crumb in an hour has already collected two bunches of Vietnamese, and is clearly not going to stop,” “Not able to move along the sand. Excellent crawling on the ground 1-2mm! Trying to climb on some plants with low and wide leaves. From the glass easily climbs on leaning snags. Still - along the glass it is buried in the sand, where algae sit between the sand and the glass, and happily eats them out. I need another septar, ”“ for a week, a quarantine of 30 liters was cleaned from the greenery in quarantine, the glass was already shiny, and they were awaited by excellent water-lined ulitos that had grown too thick. ”
In two aquariums, water is poured from the same reservoir, but freshwater mussels, which are living filters, were placed in the second aquarium!
The same function they perform in aquariums.
P one of these mollusks: China, Indonesia, Vietnam and other Asian countries.
The optimal parameters for the content: temperature 15-30 ° C, PH 6.4-8.5, gH 10-24.
Not demanding on the quality of the water in the aquarium, but there must be a good saturation of the water with oxygen, which means aeration in the aquarium is obligatory. Water changes and filtration in the aquarium are also needed. Korbikulya grow up to 3 cm in size. Life expectancy: 4 - 7 years
The recommended soil is sand of a fraction of 1-3 mm, in which the corticles are buried almost entirely. The soil layer should be at least 2-3 cm.
Corbicules are excellent helpers in the aquarium against cloudiness of the water, as they are filter filters.
Passing water through them, they feed on the microorganisms contained in it.
According to different sources: someone recommends keeping one tank per 100 liter aquarium. There is information about the content in 20 liters of two or even three individuals.
Such mollusks are recommended to be kept in spawners, where the need for clean water is especially important. Corbicula lets through 5 liters of aquarium water per hour!
In aquariums where these mollusks live, the water is always crystal clear, does not bloom and does not have suspension and turbidity!
An interesting fact is that in aquariums, where corbicules are kept, ichthyophorosis diseases do not occur, in the opinion of aquarists, corbicules retain ichthyophthirius cysts that swim in free flight.
You can keep a corbicul with all peaceful fish and shrimps.
Corbicula are hermaphroditic, reproduction problems in the aquarium there. Viviparous corbicula, reproduce tiny, hardly visible snails with an unaided eye. In an aquarium, newborn corbicules look like a muddy cloud, then sink to the bottom, where they continue to grow and develop.
If plants with a weak root system grow in your tank, corbicules, plowing up the ground, can easily dig them up.

The history of the origin of the Siamese seaweed
Siam Algae - an effective fighter with the "black beard"
Siamese seaweed comes from Indochina. It has another name of English origin - SAE (from Siamese Alqae Eater) and is found in the rivers of the Mekong and the Malay Peninsula. Under natural habitat conditions, this fish prefers fleeting streams with a solid bottom of sand, gravel or cobblestone. She chooses the places where the flooded snags or tree roots are located.
In 1962, the species was introduced to Europe. In the 70s of the last century it was established that the Siamese seaweed is the only aquarium fish that eats red algae. This fact contributed to its popularity.
Lifestyle and appearance with photos
Algae does not differ spectacular appearance
The body of the algae is elongated, closer to the tail, it becomes flattened. In the natural environment, individuals reach 16 cm. The length of a fish raised in captivity varies within 14 cm. The body has a gray-brown color and the belly is light silver. From the nose to the tail fin passes the black stripe. When the fish is in a state of fear, it becomes pale. All scales have a black edging. The fins are colorless, sometimes frosted. The upper lip resembles the letter V. There are small antennae on it. Algae dwellers live up to 10 years.
To distinguish the fish by gender can be on several grounds. Females are thicker and larger than males. Some females change the color of the antennae and lips, which turn orange or red. Sometimes in females the fins become yellow, and the rays of the dorsal fin darken noticeably.
Fish are extremely active and tend to dominate
Algae - quite active fish. They are constantly in motion in search of food or simply chasing their relatives. Algae-eaters remove vegetation from the walls of the aquarium, snags, stones and leaves. The most notable results in this shows the young growth of 5–7 cm. Algae eaters destroy even hard algae, which are of no interest to other fish that feed on vegetation. Including black beard. They eat the flora, which is located in the lower layers of the aquarium. Fish to the upper plants are rarely harmful.
The swim bladder algae is underdeveloped. For this reason, the fish is not able to constantly keep in the water, it needs rest. In the aquarium for this purpose must be snags, soil or plants with large leaves. Adults prefer to rest on the bottom or on the stems growing below. Young fish are located on the leaves.
Differences ordinary Siamese and false algae
When choosing a fish, it is important not to confuse it with a false algae. You can distinguish them by certain characteristics. There are many similarities in the appearance of these two species of fish, but the false algae does not feed on algae.
Standard Siamese algae do not rely on pectoral fins in an aquarium.
How to equip an aquarium?
For fish you need a spacious aquarium with good aeration.
Since the algae is quite mobile, he needs a spacious aquarium. For two individuals, a capacity of at least 100 liters is required. In nature, these fish live in fast-flowing reservoirs that are well saturated with oxygen. Therefore, in the aquarium should always be good aeration. It is also desirable to create a small flow. You can install a special pump that will form a jet with a filter. Water conditions of the aquarium should comply with the following parameters:
- temperature - 23–26 ° С,
- hardness - 5–20 dH,
- acidity - 5.5–8 pH.
Every week it is necessary to replace 30% of the water. The intensity of illumination for the algae does not matter. At the bottom, fine gravel or non-sharp stones are laid with a layer of 3–4 cm. Snags, stones, and vegetation are placed in the tank.
In addition to algae, the Siamese algae need and normal feed.
The algae in the aquarium is not enough for fish, they need to be given regular food: dry, live or frozen. Finely chopped vegetables are also added to the diet: spinach, zucchini, cucumbers. Algae eaters love to eat moss, especially Javanese. It is enough for them to give food once a day. Live food (cyclops, daphnia, cortex, bloodworms, pipe worker) is mined in natural waters. But in the conditions of the city it is not very convenient. In addition, along with such food can be brought into the aquarium bacteria and viruses.
More practical is frozen food. It is amenable to special treatment, as a result of which all bacteria and fungi die. Feed goes on sale in ready to use form. You only need to get the finished cube out of the freezer and after 15 minutes, throw it into the aquarium. Feed must be stored at -18 ° C. In order not to overfeed the fish, they need to fill in the amount of food that they eat in 3 minutes.
Important! With abundant feeding, the fish will lose interest in algae and will feed exclusively on food, therefore, they will no longer clean the aquarium.
Compatibility with other inhabitants
Algae eaters normally get along with other fish, if they do not feel competition
The nature of the algae is relatively peaceful. But not all types of fish can become its neighbors. Algae can not be kept together with two-color Labe. In the struggle for territory they will begin to compete, which could result in injuries and death of fish. A similar result will lead to the joint content of several males of the algae.
Also undesirable neighbors are voile species. Algae eaters gnaw off their fins. Unsuitable neighbors for them are the cichlids. Active seaweed will disturb them with their behavior, especially during the spawning period.
Aquarium should be covered with a lid, otherwise the fish will jump out of it. In the absence of such a possibility, the surface of the water is covered with floating plants. Inexperienced aquarists may be intimidated by the behavior of the sea-spawner, which turns the belly up. This should not cause concern, the fish in this position is asleep.
Important! Algae-eaters are kept singly or in packs, but only one male should be in a group.
At present, there are no cases of reproduction of Siamese algae in aquarium conditions. The fish themselves do not spawn on their own, and there is no information regarding the promotion of this process. In their natural environment, females spawn eggs on plants, after which the males fertilize them. Seaweed are transported to the CIS countries from South-East Asia.
This can be caused by several factors: temperature fluctuations in the aquarium, violation of the norms of hardness and acidity, undesirable proximity to other fish. If water is not replaced in time, its quality can also trigger stress from the algae. Such a phenomenon is the result of keeping in one capacity two or more males who are fighting for territory. To save the fish from stress, you need to eliminate the cause.
The first impression is a funny, sheburshny fish, constantly in motion. An hour later, they began to scrape something off the plants. In general, my opinion is that successfully blended into the aquarium.
The problems with algae are created first of all with a strong current (I think so). But when these assistants are found in aqua, the amount of algae is reduced to zero (bearded woolly). Somehow I had to make a forced experiment, I had to remove the CAE, the anubes' leaves were covered with some kind of wool.
Harmless, unpretentious, mobile and active fish, suitable for general aquarium.
Exactly because of their ability to eat black beard, they are very useful for aquases, and just interesting fish.
Algae eaters perform a sanitary function and help maintain the aquarium. In the care they are unpretentious. Can live with many types of fish. But when buying you need to be vigilant in order not to get a false algae, for which the algae are absolutely not of gastronomic interest.
