History of origin
Czechoslovak Wolf Dog - Czech Wolf, or Vlchak, artificially created breed. To date her age is close to 60 years since the birth of the first litter. The idea to cross a German shepherd dog with a Carpathian wolf belonged to Karl Hartl, a Czech breeder who devoted his whole life to training and raising dogs in the pedigree nursery of Czechoslovakia.
The pursued goal was to obtain for the protection of state objects an absolutely new kind of breed that has wolf endurance and temperament while preserving the schooling instinct.. Much attention was paid to heredity, especially at the stage of matings with animals taken directly from the natural environment. It was important to maintain a high degree of learning that the dogs had to inherit from the German Shepherd.
As a result of mating wolves and handsome males of the German Shepherd breed, during 1958 a galaxy of puppies first hybrid litters was born, whose blood consisted of 10% of German shepherds, and 90% of the Carpathian wolf.
Over the next 25 years, Czech breeders by common efforts sought the perfect purity of the breed. The beginning of 1982 in the cynological environment of the country was marked by the official "birth" of the breed - the Czechoslovak wolf dog, and on the eve of the new millennium, namely in 1999, the breed is recognized by the World Cynological Society. For 17 years under the auspices of FCI, the Czechoslovak wolf dog has triumphantly marched around the exhibition rings of international dog shows.
Breed destination
The aggravated canine instinct obtained by crossing a breed dog with a wild animal and the hereditary health of a wolf allow the Czech goat to be unrivaled ranger and excellent hunter. it absolutely fearless animal, able to tirelessly guard the objects entrusted to it - herds of domestic animals, housing and property, as well as the person himself.
The breed, originally bred for military special operations, was later used. for carrying protective guard duty. Vlchak also found his place in the rescue teams. Lately Czech vlchaka loved by the townspeople, having discerned in him a devoted and loving companion dog.
To date, obtaining such an individual in cynology is considered the most successful. The result of crossing a shepherd dog and a wild wolf exceeded all expectations. The only thing that does not know how to do a top is barking like a dog. He publishes howling roulades, occasionally cooling blood, to the command “Voice”.
Breed Representatives have amazing obedience. Besides dogs characterized by ultra-fast response to the host team. This lightweight, harmoniously built, besides fearless and hardy dog conquers your mind and wit. Created for protection, Czech wolf dogs superbly cope with their duties.
Have dogs independent character, but nonetheless, they are strongly attached to the owner. This is especially the case when a dog recognizes the owner of a pack leader - a strong and characteristic person who can and is able to lead.
It should be remembered that the Czechoslovak wolf dog nothing just will not do. She needs strong motivationto become an obedient tool in the hands of the owner. Only the authority of the owner can make the dog manageable. But in return, the owner gets the most gentle and loving friend, ready to obey absolutely everything.
Breed video review
The full version of the history of the origin of the Czech (Czechoslovak) wolf dog, the peculiarities of the character of the Vlchak, and how to raise this extraordinary beast, literally in love with a person - from the "first mouth". Video shows Planet of Dogs and its permanent host Gregory Maneuv in the homeland of dogs that appeared in the history of mankind exactly 35 years ago:
Choosing a puppy
A key aspect in choosing a puppy is the health of the parents of the litter.. For breed Czechoslovak wolf dog, price is of secondary importance. Therefore, the overestimated cost of a puppy may not speak of a pure breed of dog. Confirmation that in front of you is a real Czech vlchak, can only be the pedigree of the father and mother, traced to at least the seventh generation.
Since genetic abnormalities and predisposition to diseases in young breeds are minimized, litter puppies are usually strong, active, and do not suffer from many diseases characteristic of ancient breeds of dogs.
On examination, the main thing is to identify possible defects:
- The bite should be scissor., with a full set of teeth.
- Limbs without curvature. Set the rear and front paws parallel, without club foot or razmeta.
- Tail without kinks.
- Lack of cryptorchidism.
Two-month puppies are active, playful and very curious. All litter in good condition should have:
The abdomen is soft, average fatness, without signs of rickety or the presence of worms (swollen belly). The smell emanating from babies should not contain impurities of acetone or other impurities uncharacteristic for babies.
In the veterinary passport There should be marks about compulsory vaccinations - comprehensive vaccinations in accordance with the puppy's age. Especially this fact should be paid attention if the choice fell on the bred individual.
Before moving the puppy necessarily measure the temperature.
Nicknames and names
New owners rarely leave behind their pets the official nicknames given to the puppies in the nursery. As a rule, almost all puppies are renamed, giving them home names that do not appear in tribal books. They choose names that sound and carry the meaning for the new owner.
Popular home nicknames used for Czech tops:
- for dogs - Bib, Olf, Biker, Jacques, Carol, Erema,
- for bitches - Posya, Olli, Meiggy, Asya, Rusya, Connie, Bizzy.
Breed origin
This difficult breeding work involved cynologist Karel Hartl on the territory of the kennel for dogs, intended for border and military service. Initially, the experiment was unsuccessful, and the wolf failed to give a good offspring. After replacing the dog, the scientists still managed to achieve an excellent result. The first dogs obtained in this way were trained and used to patrol the border.
The whole world learned about this hybrid breed only after almost 20 years. In the 70s of the 20th century, several wolves were imported into the territory of Great Britain, they were assigned guard duty in factories and enterprises. This was possible thanks to the engineer Hartle, who was bothering to allow the export of these dogs. If this had not happened, the development and growth of the popularity of the breed would have been impossible.
Description of breed Czechoslovak wolf dog
If the first two offspring showed good performance, then the third revealed an external similarity between wolves and wolves. But still they had a difference from those and others. The standard of the breed, which is preserved until now, was bred in the 70-80s.
This is a large, wiry dog that looks like a wolf, with a rectangular, balanced torso. She from birth has developed muscles and strong teeth. Thanks to the wolf instincts, the representatives of the breed turned out to be universal dogs.
The constitution of hybrids is arranged so that they can run for long distances:
- Muzzle possesses clean, clear lines, the lobe is pigmented with black color, oval. The bridge of the nose is straight, the lips are dry, fit snugly, with black edging. The teeth are well developed, the canines are long, sharp, with a straight or scissor bite.
- Eyes medium sized, slightly slanting, with a yellowish amber iris. Auricles are small, in the form of a triangle, standing.
- Tail It is located high, in a quiet state, it hangs when the dog is excited - forms a sickle and rises.
- Limbs tall, muscular. Perhaps the appearance of dewclaws, which is undesirable - they must be removed.
Wool and colors
Czechoslovakian wolf dog is covered with thick, straight coat. Moreover, winter and summer wool varies significantly. In winter there is a rich, dense undercoat, and together with the guard hair, it forms an excellent protection against cold weather. Wool covers the entire body, and even the stomach, thighs, including, on the inside, the testes, the inside of the ears and paws between the fingers.
The color of wolves is characteristic - varies from yellowish-gray to gray-silver. Be sure to have a mask light coloring. Also, the light hair is on the neck and front of the chest. In addition, the standard allowed individuals with a dark gray color and a light mask.
Wolf dog character
The temperament of Czechoslovakian wolves is also unique, as it distinguishes them from dogs and wolves. Such a pet is not recommended to start for beginners who do not have experience in dealing with large dogs of official breeds. However, one should not think that the wolf has a wild and unbridled temper, he just needs a strong hand, and the owner must become an authority for him, which in nature makes the leader of the pack.
With the right approach, the owner will be delighted with the qualities that wolfhund has:
- The dog is very devoted. A pack for these hybrid dogs is a top priority, for which he is able to sacrifice his life without hesitation.
- Courage is another characteristic quality. The dog is of little interest in the size and number of offenders of his family. He will rush to the defense and will show all his wolf ferocity.
- Independence. The Czech wolf has a developed intellect, he is able to think and even in extreme conditions remains cool. This allows him to decide how to act. For example, if a child sinks, the dog will not wait until the owner gives him a command.
- Endurance. There is a number of recorded data that the dogs of this breed overcame 100 km, not stopping for a breather, and their average speed was about 12 km / h.
- Volchak - a born guard. He can guard the house, its inhabitants and even things. If you offer your pet guard slippers, then while the owner does not hang up, no one will approach them.
- Czech Wolfhounds are mistrustful of strangers. Due to this quality, the dog in any conditions remains incorruptible, no delicacy or good attitude will help to win over the dog. Until the owner confirms that the people who came are his own, the wolf will be wary of watching them and waiting for a “trick”.
- Friendly dog. A Czechoslovakian wolf dog can be kept with other pets, including dogs. Cats can be wonderful friends wolf. The only thing is that if you start large males, at certain moments they may show dominant qualities.
- Such a pet is very insightful. It is enough for a dog to see the gestures and facial expressions of the owner in order to determine the mood in which he is, whether he is ready to communicate with his four-legged friend, or whether this is not a good moment.
- Another quality wolf - sociability. Representatives of such a hybrid breed are not alien to ordinary dog joys. They enjoy the caress and attention of their family members. However, the dog will not impose its company if everyone is busy.
For what purposes are dogs of this breed used?
As already noted, the breed was taken out for military service, however, its abilities make it possible to use a wolf in search and rescue operations. In addition, dogs have shown themselves well in defensive-guard activities, and the mixture of canine and wolf instincts makes them successful hunters and trackers.
Another type of work - the protection and protection of livestock, dogs are loyal to the pack and extremely fearless. And their endurance and excellent health allows Wolf to be driving dogs, as they are used at home. Although they are slower than huskies, Siberian Huskies or Malamutes, but they can run for a very long time without slowing down.
Today, wolves often give birth as security guards and human rights defenders. Their socialization is quite high, which makes them comfortable companions and family dogs.
Features of training
Vlchak is a very emotional dog, so for the upbringing and training the owner will need patience and perseverance. If you do not show firmness and allow the dog to shirk during training, he will establish his own rules and will adhere to them, bypassing the wishes of the owner. The nature of the dogs is not easy, but they are not re-educated, but sent to a good cause. The owner needs to keep himself in hand, not to show aggression, physical violence and heightened tone will not give a positive result, but only harm. If the owner begins to panic, the dog will definitely feel it and will also become anxious.
For excellent interaction, it is important to establish contact with the pet, it is also a good idea to treat the pet with delicacies, but not just for good work. In addition, the dog responds positively to voice promotion.
It is recommended that you take an obedience course with your pet. If you need a pet as a hunting dog, then it is advisable to go with him "kursing". Vlchak will enjoy running around for hares in a race with their own kind. At home, vigilantly monitor the purity of the breed, dogs are regularly tested and strictly selected.
Maintenance and care
Czechoslovakian wolf dog can be kept in outdoor conditions, as it perfectly tolerates any temperature. This is not a chain dog, although some owners prefer similar content.
Most often, dogs are provided with a spacious aviary and freely released on the local area. But in this case, you should take care of a strong high fence, which the dog can not overcome. Vlchaki are very clever and cunning, it is easy for them to open doors that do not have a heavy, complicated lock, or to dismantle wood barriers. Naturally, in this case, they escape.
A pet needs a booth and, arranging it, you need to take into account the decent size of the dog. It is advisable to close the entrance with dense material that will serve as protection from winds and precipitation. However, it is not surprising that, even with a comfortable, warm booth, the dog will often sleep in the snow, even with severe frosts and blizzards.
Vlchaka puppies can be sent to the aviary with 3-4 months or earlier, after vaccination in the warm season. Representatives of this breed feel good in the apartment, where they find a secluded place and settle there. Here and should equip a place for your pet.
When purchasing a puppy of a Czechoslovak wolf dog, owners must take into account their activity and curiosity. And they explore the world, mainly with their teeth. Leaving the house, you can protect the property and the pet from injury, leaving him in a special cage. Of course, we are not talking about long periods.
In whatever conditions the dog is kept, he, in any case, needs regular walking. Early socialization is important and therefore a pet should be brought to crowded places from an early age. This will allow him to get used to the noise, a lot of people and get acquainted with their reactions.
The dog does not need frequent washing, as its coat does not allow sticking of dirt and various particles. It is an excellent protection against moisture and overheating. Pet does not need special clothes. It is recommended to put a harness on the dog for about one and a half years, as it distributes the load more evenly when compared with a collar.
Vlchaki subject to seasonal molting, and this process twice a year proceeds so intensely that the dog is left with almost no undercoat. To speed up the replacement of wool, you can wash the dog, and then dry the coat with a compressor. Old wool is blown out with warm air, which reduces the likelihood of formation of tangles and skin irritation.
Особое внимание заслуживают зубы влчака, особенно если пес участвует в выставках или несет службу. They need professional cleaning, which is carried out in a veterinary clinic. Usually, dogs' claws are stabbed naturally, however, dogs kept in flat conditions may need to be shortened with special forceps.
Care and maintenance
Obtained from a wild ancestor, Czechoslovak wolf dogs do not need exclusive or any special care. Wool, as a rule, twice a month, combed with a special brush. Since the dogs molt before summer season, it is desirable to acquire a furminator. Then the process of removing the undercoat will be simple, and the procedure will give your pet pleasure.
A strong dental system needs a routine inspection every six to eight months. Ears are cleaned at intervals of about 30 days, more often in summer, less often in winter. Claws are clipped as they grow, but such procedures are extremely rare for vlchaka. The dog perfectly grinds off claws for a walk. Wash dogs only when necessary.without abusing detergent cosmetics.
Animal very well adapted to life in a city apartment, if he often and many walk. To teach a puppy to go to the toilet on a diaper when housing maintenance is undesirable. Of course, the conditions of a private house with an adjacent territory and a spacious enclosure in the courtyard can be attributed to the ideal option, but not all owners of the Czech top have such capabilities.
Dogs in large quantities and often spending time in nature should be timely treated from blood-sucking parasites. Bites of ticks, fleas and even mosquitoes can deliver many unpleasant worries for the wearer, since insects are carriers of dangerous infectious diseases that are dangerous to the health and even life of a pet.
Health and heredity
Dogs of this breed have truly wolf health.. These are strong and healthy animals. with a complete lack of genetically inherited diseases. The only breed predisposition is susceptibility to diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Most commonly diagnosed hip dysplasia.
As a rule, dysplasia in an animal develops not due to heredity, but as a result of improper nurturing. Mainly:
- eating disorders,
- slippery flooring
- lack of diet of vitamin-calcium complex,
- lack of walking and physical exertion,
- injury due to oversight.
Modern medicine and highly qualified specialists successfully eliminate this problem, but the situation requires considerable financial injections and moral strength from both the owner and the pet.
Catering
Czechoslovakian Wolfhund absolutely not capricious regarding food. They are equally happy eat both natural products and ready-made feeds. In the diet of natural nutrition protein percentage should be at least 80%.
For dogs older than six months, the main component of the diet are offal:
A small part of the cereals, mostly rice and buckwheat. Pasta wolf dogs are contraindicated.
From ready-made feeds, it is preferable to choose premium dry food., and the best super-premium for large breeds, leading an active lifestyle, and feed the dog in accordance with the age category of the product. The best transition for a puppy from mother's milk to solid food is dry food with components based on bitch milk. It is soaked and given to puppies when their mother has practically fed them.
Upbringing and training
Breed very temperament, and in the self-training of the pet should not make mistakes, or mistreatment. Motivation is needed, built so that the animal understands it. Then the classes are held smoothly and quickly reach the goal. Making the vlchaka execute commands under duress is unrealistic. He will not only cease to obey, will become stubborn, but also express a certain amount of aggression.
Advantages and disadvantages
Spinning Tops have the highest degree of affection for the person, his family and habitat. Animals do not like to be alone so much that they fall into a state like fear, which, in turn, grows into a rage.
This is not a cute pet.. Without a doubt, a dog of this breed is more than any other breed, education is necessary, because vlchaka more than other breeds, manifest natural instincts. And even if your pet from the second time understood how to go to the toilet on the street, and immediately began to ask for a walk after that, this does not mean that you can tolerate an animal and stay in education on what has been achieved.
Properly educated and properly socialized dog gives a lot of joy to the owner. You should also not forget about personal responsibility when half-waves are brought up in a house, especially if children grow up in a family.
Arthur:
This breed is not for wimps and not for nervous people. Dachshunds, poodles and even shepherd dogs are dogs. Vlchaki in essence - wolves. They don't even bark. Yes, and the nature of this is the direct descendants of wild animals. I do not recommend to beginners. None of them has yet coped with the present wolff.
Ivanov I.I .:
I agree that the education of a dog, and maybe not a dog at all, is given with great difficulty. But the person who curbed this stubborn temper ultimately gets a loving, tender and most devoted being on the planet, with a huge and noble soul.
Breed history
The Czechoslovakian wolfer appeared thanks to Karel Hartl, the head of the frontier cynological service, who decided in 1955 to tie German shepherd dogs and Carpathian wolves. The goal is to get a working animal with the appearance of a wolf and the qualities of a working dog. The first puppies in May 1958 were brought by a Brita she-wolf, covered by a German Shepherd dog, nicknamed Cézar z Březového háje. The father of the second litter (here, in Liebejowice) was another dog named Kurt z Vaclavky. Parents of the third brood are the German Shepherd Asta z SNB and the wolf Argo.
The last infusion of wolf blood dates back to 1983, when the wolf Lejdy was mated to a male Bojar vom Shottenhof. The best litter pup, named Kazan z PS, was selected (and then involved in breeding three times) for the tribe. Further, the selection was engaged in civilians who created in 1982 the breeders club of Czechoslovakian Vlczak (Brno). One of the convinced propagandists of the new breed is called Frantisek Rosik.
It is interesting! In the summer of 1989, the breed was conditionally recognized by the FCI (giving breeders time for revision), and in 1999 the Czechoslovakian wolf was officially registered and included in the group of herding breeds.
In 2012, over 300 Czechoslovakian wolf dogs lived in the Czech Republic / Slovakia, and in 2014, twice as many. Breed appreciated on the European continent and began to import to other countries, including Russia.
Description of Czechoslovak Vlchaka
The exterior of the vlchak is very similar to its wild relative of the wolf, which is visible in the outlines of a rectangular body, texture / color of wool and movements. Vlchak has a height above average, a strong constitution and a pronounced sexual dimorphism. Height at withers: for a bitch not less than 0.6 m, for a dog not less than 0.65 m. The optimal weight for a dog starts from 26 kg, for a female - 20 kg.
Head and body
The head is developed, proportional to the body and resembles a blunt wedge. The ears are short, standing, triangular. On a narrow face muscular (not bulging) cheekbones are noticeable. Eyes are planted somewhat slanted and fitted with tightly fitting dry eyelids. The color of the iris is amber. The oval nose is painted black. Strong symmetrical jaws are characterized by a scissor bite.
The neck (at an angle of 40 ° to the horizon) is relatively long, pronounced withers, and the back is wide. The chest is pear-shaped, the abdomen is taut, slightly sunken in the sides. Slightly convex loin developed moderately. The croup is horizontal and short. Straight strong limbs Vlchaka located fairly close to each other. Elastic and elastic skin without pigmentation / folds. A high-set tail usually hangs, but rises up when running, taking the shape of a sickle.
Dog character
This is a serious breed that cannot be trusted by beginners and children.. Czechoslovakian vlchak was taken out for army special operations, later reorienting for civilian purposes - search and rescue / trace and shepherd work, protective and guard duty, hunting, and also sports competitions (obedience, agility and towing). With the temperament, the wolf is reminiscent of a German Shepherd, in whose veins wild wolf blood periodically plays. This is manifested in the characteristic look and characteristics of behavior in a dog pack. Females demonstrate bright maternal instinct.
It is interesting! About endurance. Some vlchak able to run 100 km, not stopping for a rest (at an average speed of about 12 km / h).
High intelligence is supported by composure, lightning reaction and independence, so the dog is ready to act independently in extreme situations (without a host command). Vlchak is balanced, energetic and bold, which makes him an excellent guard and protector. He is friends with all family members, but submits only to the owner. He does not trust the stranger: he ignores someone, but he has open hostility towards someone. It gets along well with domestic animals, especially with cats and small dogs. Doesn’t like to share the territory with adult dogs. On walks she drives street cats and birds.
The content of the Czechoslovak wolf dog
Direct descendants of wolves are not afraid of heat and cold, so they are often kept under the open sky, where a spacious aviary is preferable to a chain. If the house adjoining territory is surrounded by a high fence, the vlchaka is released for free range. But you must be sure that all the gates are closed, and the fence is able to resist a powerful pressure: flimsy wooden shtaketniki excluded.
If the dog lives in the yard, build a comfortable and large booth with a tightly covered entrance so that rain and wind do not penetrate. True, the real vlchak despises comfort and often sleeps in the snow, sipping Jamaican rum without paying attention to frost and blizzard.
Important! Puppies are taught to the cage from about 3 months of age, after vaccination and quarantine, better in the warm season.
When starting a vlchaka in an apartment, do not forget about his vigor, ingenuity and curiosity.. Most likely, he himself will choose a secluded corner for the rest, where you will have to move his rug. Like any dog, the wolves will begin exploring the space with their teeth. If you plan to leave the house for a long time, get a cage where you will place the dog. So that it does not seem like a punishment to the puppy, put there a rug, toys and a sugar stone.
Care and hygiene
Due to the texture of wool, it does not trap dirt and dust, which allows to avoid excess washing. In addition, the coat of the wool is a natural protection against overheating and excessive moisture. The disadvantages include intense seasonal molt, at which the undercoat falls almost completely. Accelerating the process, the dog is washed and dried with a warm hair dryer to blow out dead hair (this prevents skin irritation and wool stalling).
Service and show dogs must brush their teeth. The procedure is preferable to carry out in the clinic. In order not to engage in clipping claws, one must walk along the roads where there is a hard surface. Clothing vlchaku not needed, but about one and a half years, we must abandon the collar in favor of the harness, which distributes the load evenly.
Valid Products
- beef, boiled pork (low-fat), goose (low-fat), chicken, turkey (without skin, bones and fat),
- low-fat ocean fish (boiled and boneless),
- offal, including boiled beef udder, as well as liver / kidney (rare),
- chicken / quail eggs - raw and in the form of an omelet (not every day),
- buckwheat, rice, sometimes “Hercules” - barley and wheat cereals are needed for weight gain, pearl barley for dropping,
- cottage cheese and dairy products (without additives),
- corn and raw potatoes, cabbage - boiled / stewed, other vegetables - the choice of dogs.
Occasionally you can indulge the dog with currants, rowan, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews and pine nuts.
Important! Vlchaku (without allergic problems) allowed citrus fruits, but exotic fruits are prohibited. Also undesirable apricot, plum and peaches, as provocateurs diarrhea.
Add a little vegetable oil to all vegetable side dishes. Do not forget about such useful products as yeast, tricalcium phosphate feed, bone meal and salt.
How much is a vlchaka puppy?
Despite the rarity of the breed and the uniqueness of its origin, it cannot be called very expensive. A puppy with a pedigree from titled parents can be bought for 40000-50000 rubles, but this is recommended only in nurseries with a good reputation.
A Czechoslovakian wolf dog is a hybrid of a dog and a wolf, and this already indicates the seriousness of such a pet. This is not a decorative dog, and buying it purely out of curiosity is not worth it. Wolf is better to start people who can work with large service dogs. But even in this case, the owners of hybrid dogs are faced with some of the habits and characteristics that they inherited from wild ancestors.
Interesting breed: Cane Corso.
Historical background and the birthplace of Czechoslovak wolf dogs
The breed of Czechoslovakian Wolfhund appeared relatively recently. For the first time about the possible crossing of dogs and wolves began to talk in Czechoslovakia in 1955. Since these animals are related, the probability of the appearance of full-fledged offspring was very high.
In support of this theory, a group of scientists, led by Carl Hartl, began a scientific experiment in which Carpathian wolves were used, which were crossed with various breeds of dogs, in particular, with German shepherd dogs. The offspring in nature and appearance more resembled wolves, and at the same time, it was less amenable to training than purebred dogs.
In 1965, the experiment was completed, and after a few years Czech tops were actively used for service in the border troops and police. Since then, the selection has gained popularity, these dogs began to breed in both public and private kennels. And in 1982 the cynological society of Czechoslovakia recognized the breed and secured its status as national.
Outside its historical homeland, a wolf dog was virtually unknown until 1990. After the division of the state into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the popularity of breeding increased significantly, and in 1998 it was recognized by the International Canine Federation.
In 2006, wolffs came to the United States, and by 2012 there were already more than 70 individuals of this variety in the country who lived in 16 different states. Later, Czech spinners began to gain popularity in European countries, especially in Italy. The fashion for them does not pass to this day, although it is not easy to acquire such an animal, since there are not so many kennels involved in breeding Czechoslovak wolf dogs.
The breed Czechoslovakian wolf was recognized only in 1998.
The purpose of the Czechoslovak wolf dog
The excellent health and fearless nature of the Czech tops allows them to be used as hunting dogs, as well as for the protection and conduct of military operations. The descendants of wolves regularly carry protective guard duty, they are excellent trackers and are almost indispensable as rescuers.
In addition, the simplest townspeople also get the tops, since these animals are loyal and faithful companion dogs.
Note. According to the characteristics of the breed, wolves, by nature and temperament, are more wolves than dogs, therefore those who acquire animals of this species should seriously consider raising and socializing them.
Description and characteristics of the breed with photos
At first glance, the Czech top can easily be confused with its wild ancestor. An animal of this variety reaches 65 cm in height at the withers and weighs about 25 kg. Vlchak bitches are somewhat smaller, but just like males, they have a strong build and proportionate body shapes.
The description of the breed indicates the following distinguishing characteristics of the Wolfhund:
- The head is medium-sized and triangular in shape, with a broad and moderately prominent forehead.
- Ears are triangular and pointed, standing upright and having large sizes.
- The muzzle is elongated, tapering towards the end, with strong cheekbones and thin elastic lips of black color.
- The eyes are almond-shaped and slightly slanted, yellow-amber in color, with close-fitting eyelids.
- The nose is oval, medium in size and black in color.
- Fangs powerful and well developed, standing upright.
- Bite pincer or scissor.
- The body is rectangular and muscular, with pronounced withers.
- The chest is shallow and voluminous.
- The loin is muscular and sloping.
- The croup is wide and sloping.
- Paws of medium length, with well-developed muscles. The pads are strong and large.
- The tail is crescent, usual length.
These are strong and graceful animals that can move at high speed and have a lightning reaction.
Color and type of wolf dog hair
In winter and summer, a wolf dog looks different. In the process of autumn molt, a thick undercoat grows in the animal, due to which the guard hairs are raised and the fur coat becomes more fluffy. In summer, the wolfer seems almost smooth.
The color of wolf dogs has various shades of gray with a mixture of yellowish or silver hairs. As a rule, the inner side of the neck and chest of the animal have a lighter color than the rest of the body.
Health and life expectancy
The lifespan of wolf dogs varies from 15 to 18 years, while animals retain all the necessary skills to old age and are able to serve no worse than young dogs.
Wolves have rewarded their descendants with excellent health, so the representatives of the population do not have a propensity for hereditary and genetic diseases. It is enough to vaccinate the animal in time and carry out prevention from ticks and parasites, as well as to provide the dog with regular physical exertion so that it remains cheerful and healthy until old years.
However, like most animals that need increased training, wolves can suffer from diseases of the hip joints.
With good care and maintenance of the dog breed, the Czechoslovakian wolf can live up to 18 years.
Character and temperament of the breed
The peculiarity of the Czechoslovak wolf dogs is that, like their ancestors, they are nocturnal. In relations with humans, animals of this breed hardly recognize the primacy of the owner and are much smaller than other types of dogs that need to be managed. However, it is necessary to start raising wolves right away so as not to get problems later.
Wolf dogs are strongly attached to the owners and their households, and it is almost impossible to transfer such an animal to another family. In addition, they are incredibly suspicious of strangers and with the appearance of a new member of the "clan" can get used to it for a long time, sometimes it takes months and years.
Attitudes towards children in Czech tops are ambiguous. On the one hand, these animals are very loyal to the kids, but they can get annoyed if the child tries to engage the pet in a game in which he does not want to participate. It is better not to bring such dogs to families where there are children under 10 years old.
To other dogs, the representatives of this population are very aggressive and can get along with them only in those cases if they occupy a dominant position. As descendants of wild wolves, they attach great importance to the hierarchy in the pack. In this regard, experts advise to keep Czechoslovak tops only with dogs of the opposite sex.
Czechoslovak dogs get along well with relatives of only the opposite sex.
On a note. Since the hunting instincts of the descendants of wolves are perfectly preserved, the owner should be prepared for the fact that the pet will hunt for cats, squirrels, rats and other wildlife. Some of them are dangerous even for those “neighbors” with whom they have lived side by side since childhood.
Necessary care and breeding requirements
It is very easy to care for the coat of a Czechoslovak wolf dog, since it has the peculiarity of cleaning up on its own. Even if the dog became very dirty in rainy and slushy weather, the dirt, having dried out, disappears by itself, leaving no traces.
When an animal moults, the owner’s dwelling will not be “adorned” with bunches of fallen wool. The pads will come out in neat parts, and if you comb your pet at least 1 time in 2 days, the molt will go away without any problems. Outside this process, brushing will have to be performed much less frequently, about once every 2 weeks.
If you still need to buy a pet, it is important to remember that this should be done no more than 2 times a month, and use gentle shampoos and conditioners. If a hair dryer is used when drying an animal, it should not be brought close to the dog's body, so as not to overdry hair and skin.
The wool of Czech wolves is self-cleaning and does not need special care.
In addition, the care of the Czechoslovak top includes the following procedures:
- brushing your teeth
- washing the ears
- claws cut
The listed procedures are carried out as necessary, with observance of precautionary measures. In addition, you will need to regularly examine the mucous membrane of the eyes and eyelids of the dog in time to notice the problems that have arisen.
When keeping Czechoslovakian wolf dogs, it is necessary to take into account the need of these animals for regular physical exertion, and a long walk with their pet in the fresh air, as well as work out various exercises. A wolf dog can be on the street in any weather, thick fur will reliably protect it from frost and wind.
Diet and rules feeding dogs
In the diet of the dog of this breed, as well as any hereditary predator, meat must be present.
In addition, the dog must be fed:
- offal (liver, kidneys, lungs and heart),
- fish
- cereals (rice, buckwheat and oatmeal),
- cottage cheese,
- boiled eggs
- kefir.
When feeding an animal, it is important to observe the following rules:
- Giving meat and fish raw, and in order to avoid contamination by worms, the product needs to be refrozen or scalded with boiling water.
- Cook porridge viscous, and oatmeal only steamed. In addition, this dish should not exceed 15% of the total diet of the dog.
- Supplement animal nutrition with vitamins and mineral complexes.

Note. Those who own an exhibition animal should be attentive to the choice of dry food. The fact is that the breed standard provides for a light shade of the iris of the eye, and some enzymes contained in concentrates contribute to the development of a more saturated pigment, due to which the dog's hair and eyes darken.
Training and education of the Czechoslovak wolf dog
Vlchaki are extremely intelligent and able to perform many types of commands, but the difficulty lies in the fact that these animals agree to do something if they see the point. They are excellent trackers and can work both in a flock and independently, this does not affect the quality of the result.
It is necessary to engage in the socialization of dogs from early childhood, it must be taught to be in society and to respond adequately to others, otherwise the behavior of the pet will be unpredictable.
It is necessary to train an animal regularly and purposefully, without trying to suppress the individuality of the dog, otherwise it will begin to ignore the person. According to experts, females of this breed give in to education much better than males. The latter tend to show character and inappropriate stubbornness, which makes training much more difficult.
Czech vlchaki quickly remember the team, but they require a special approach.
In addition, the animal should not be bored, and the exercise complexes will need to be carefully considered so that the “lessons” are diverse and interesting.
Dog Breeders Tips for Choosing a Puppy
It is necessary to acquire wolf dog puppies in specialized kennels, where the breeder can provide all the necessary documentation confirming the pedigree affiliation of the animal. The pedigree of the father and mother of the baby should be traced at least to the seventh knee.
It is better to acquire doggies at the age of 2 months, and before making the final choice, it is important to pay attention to the condition of the coat, eye, ears and skin.
In addition, a healthy and purebred baby has the following external features:
- A soft belly of average fatness without signs of bloating or rickety.
- Scissor bite with a full set of fangs.
- Limbs without curvature, clubfoot and other defects.
- Tail without kinks.
- No signs of undescended testicles in the scrotum, if we are talking about a male.

Rules of maintenance and care
The maintenance of this dog is easy. It can be kept both in the house and in the apartment. The main thing is to make sure that the dog and people have enough space for a comfortable location. Daily long-term walking is required. With a well-fenced area, the dog may be kept outside.
Basic care is quite simple:
- combing can be done once a week, during periods of molting - daily, but this process is quite fast,
- ears to inspect and clean once a week,
- claws usually grind themselves, if this does not happen - cut as necessary,
- brush teeth in old age as necessary, young dogs do not need it,
- clean eyes with lotion as they get dirty.
They can be fed with both dry food and natural food. In any case, the diet should be balanced.
For the correct feeding of the Czech breed with wolf roots there is a set of rules:
- at least half of the diet should be meat (raw can be scalded before eating in order to reduce the risk of infection with parasites),
- most of the daily portion of the dog should eat at night,
- fermented milk products and eggs are a good complement to the diet of puppies and adults,
- 1-2 times a week you need to arrange fasting days for your pet,
- fat, flour, sweet and smoked is prohibited,
- veterinarians recommend cereals (buckwheat, rice, rolled oats) as a source of carbohydrates,
- must be added to the diet of vegetables and some fruit.
For any type of food the dog must have access to clean water.
To meet such an original hybrid on the street is a great success.
The character of the breed of Sarlos
The behavior of these dogs is much more approximate to the behavior of predators in their natural environment, so their character can be called unique.
They are extremely reserved with people. The approach of a stranger causes alertness in the wolf of Sarlos and the desire to avoid contact with him. Therefore, in this case there is no question of any protective qualities of speech.
At the same time they will be able to protect their territory.
There is another feature in the behavior of this breed - they practically do not bark.
In contact with other animals, they are not aggressive, rather, on the contrary, they are trying in every way to avoid conflict. They will certainly not attack, but they will be able to defend themselves. For the rest, thanks to the pack life of their ancestors, these dogs are sociable and socialize easily. They are even recommended to start not alone, so they will feel less lonely.
He quickly becomes attached to the master of Sarlos and then is distinguished by special devotion. But without proper upbringing and attention, he quickly becomes wild and unmanageable.
The scent of this breed is developed 3 times more than that of the German Shepherd, for which it is attracted to the public service.
Sarlos dogs produce excellent rescuers due to their activity, vigilance and unique endurance.
Breed training
Rigidity and emotional stability - this is what is required of the owner of the wolf breed in training. Beginner to cope with representatives of this breed will be very difficult.
Raising sarlos is associated with regular repetitions and lifelong occupations. With the right approach, excellent service dogs and guides grow out of it.
Training and socialization of a puppy must begin at an early age. Otherwise, independence and love of freedom will prevail over the character of Sarlos.
Training needs to be diversified as much as possible, and it is also better to make them group, rather than individual. So the dog understands the command much faster.
Animal health
Good health of the breed went from wild ancestors. They live an average of 12-15 years, some individuals with proper care and nutrition live to 20 years.
Hereditary diseases are absent.
By unpretentiousness is difficult to find a competitor to these dogs
The owner only needs to take preventive measures - timely vaccination and preventive visits to the veterinarian, and not to forget about the features of feeding these animals.
Breeding characteristics
The special breeding characteristics of this breed can only be shared by Dutch nurseries, whose specialists will need to be contacted when such a desire arises.
It is more suitable for official work, rather than for housing in urban environments.
Diseases and breed defects
Breeders assure buyers that the wolf is practically not sick and is devoid of congenital defects / diseases due to its half wild origin. Most animals, indeed, are distinguished by excellent immunity and endurance, but vulnerability is still observed along the line of the German Shepherd.
That is why all the puppies of the Czechoslovak Vlchak participate in genetic testing for a number of inherited diseases:
- degenerative myelopathy is an incurable neurodegenerative disease leading to paralysis of the lower extremities. It begins with podvolakivaniya hind legs, ending with lesions of important organs,
- dysplasia of the hip joints - characterized by the destruction of articular cartilage (osteoarthritis) and severe pain syndrome. The disease is inherited, but the physical role / nutrition of the puppy during its growth play an important role,
- elbow dysplasia - there are various developmental abnormalities that cause destructive processes in the elbow joints (often lameness),
- dwarfism is an incurable disease with cessation of growth hormone production (90% of puppies die in the womb). Dogs do not grow and also suffer from itching, inflammation, baldness, and liver / kidney failure.
Genetic tests done in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, at least - in the Russian Federation.
Buy Czechoslovak wolf dog
There are few nurseries in Russia where they are engaged in breeding work with vlchak. Breed dogs are bred mainly in Moscow and Moscow region.
Particularly picky buyers go for animals in their homeland, in the Czech Republic, or in the near abroad - in Ukraine, Belarus or Lithuania. There is a reason for this - in the homeland of the Czechoslovakian Vlczak, the purity of the breed is strictly monitored, puppies are strictly selected and constantly tested.
What to look for
A person without special training is unlikely to notice breed flaws, so you should look into the documents of the producers and the puppy itself.. Whether genetic health tests are passed is the first thing that should interest a potential buyer. A serious breeder confirms this by documenting the percentage of wolf blood (for example, 27.2%) from the parents of a vlchak.
Dogs pass the general course of training, take tests on the psyche and herding instinct, become winners in agility and canikross. In a word, the more manufacturers have regalia, the more promising the puppy.
Price Czechoslovak vlchaka puppy
The amount that the puppy will cost you will be announced by phone or during a personal visit to the nursery. Usually breeders accept reservation requests pending a championship pair of litter. It is known that the price of a Czechoslovak Vlchak starts at $ 800-1,000. Rumor has it that the most expensive puppies are sold in the Czech Republic and related European countries.
Owner reviews
This is a spectacular, but difficult to maintain dog not in everyday life, but in social terms. Only young and active owners who are ready to be with him almost round the clock (especially at puppy age) are able to pacify a vlchaka. Otherwise, he will crush the apartment and make a mess in all corners. Vlchak gladly gnaws a book, passport, CD, iPhone, socks, in short, everything you can reach.
It will also be interesting:
But not only spoiled things should scare you, as a visit to the vet (any rubbish can get into the dog's stomach). With a wolfboy walk 4 hours a day. Outcrops for a quarter of an hour are fraught with razvorochennye sofas, a broken door and ripped off wallpaper - so will be stored energy.
It is interesting! The Czechoslovakian wolf dog is extremely human-centered and very bored when it breaks up with him. В его отсутствие влчак скулит, иногда лает и чаще всего воет, приводя в ужас трепетных соседей.
Не заводите чехословацкого влчака при нехватке времени, средств, желания и здоровья, иначе ваше сосуществование превратится в ад.
