Chickens are the most common animals in the household. It happens that every year more and more individuals inhabit the same farmyard. Based on this, to the question “how much does a chicken live?” Many ignorant people will answer - a year, but this is far from being the case. Next, we will tell you how many years the hens have been set aside, and what records were recorded thanks to them.

What affects life expectancy?

A number of factors influence the lifespan of chickens: breed, housing conditions, cultivation target. Below, we will describe in detail why chickens live less in industrial conditions, and vice versa. We also describe in detail the dependence of the life span of a poultry on its breed.

In many ways, the life expectancy of chickens depends on their belonging to the breed. Even ornamental birds, which are considered champions among all breeds of chickens, with improper care, may die after a few years. Despite this, some tendencies in the life span of chickens are still visible. Based on them, we will answer the question "How many chickens live?"

Least of all life span is given to the chickens, representing the meat direction, since the purpose of their cultivation is exclusively to obtain high-quality meat. For this reason, as soon as the bird ceases to gain mass, it is killed. Based on statistics, such chickens in private households and in industrial environments live on average 45-60 days, so that the meat is of the highest quality.

Layers - representatives of the egg direction - were more fortunate in this regard. The timing of laying hens is dictated by their ability to produce eggs. And since the egg chickens are well carried on average to 3 years, this is the determining factor in answering the question about the duration of their life. In practice, even at home, chickens are very rarely given for three years and only for the most productive individuals.

When the resource of egg production is practically used, the owners of chickens begin to consider their bird in terms of getting too old meat. Based on this consideration, to no avail the chicken is not left to inhabit the chicken coop and kill, as soon as it ceases to be well rooted. We note that the genetic potential of laying hens is 15-20 years old, so if you want to enjoy the look of your pet for as long as possible and not treat it as a product, then it is possible.

Regarding laying hens in the industrial sector: it is economically advantageous to use egg chickens during the first year of egg production, since with age the egg production decreases by 10-15 percent annually. Most often, in such conditions the hens live only 1-2 years.

As for meat and egg breeds, it should be said that the average life expectancy of these birds is about 1-2 years. Ornamental rocks are distinguished by the fact that they are long-lived. Good living conditions and proper diet, small demands on productivity, lack of stress guarantee them a lifetime of up to 10 years, and sometimes more.

Conditions of existence

The determining factor that affects the life expectancy of these animals is the place of detention. When a bird is raised in a dacha, more attention is paid to it and they are more loyal to it. In an incubation and farm or industrial environment, the bird should recoup the cost of self-care as quickly as possible. Such a thirst for benefits is due to the fact that over time the quality of meat and the level of egg production of chickens deteriorate due to age. At the same time, money spent on chicken is growing.

How much chickens will live at home is directly dependent on their owner. A laying hen can live for as many years as the host will take good care of her and her dwelling. The longest time the chickens live in the presence of the following factors:

  • artificial lighting with a positivity equal to 15-17 hours
  • playgrounds for walks,
  • free space for comfortable living of each individual,
  • a sufficient number of drinkers and feeders, preferably located at a distance from each other,
  • an acceptable temperature of 20 degrees
  • moderate air humidity - from 50 to 70 percent,
  • good ventilation system
  • ash baths, which will get rid of many parasites,
  • insulated walls,
  • the optimal number of females per male.

What you feed your chickens is crucial for their lifespan. If the diet is monotonous, the chicken will live a maximum of a year, if balanced - 6 years or more. Nutrition should vary depending on the season, include vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins and amino acids.

In spring and summer, the bird must produce a substantial part of the feed itself, eating grass, seeds and everything that it considers edible. It is also important to know that you can not overfeed a chicken or dramatically change its diet. According to experts, the duration of life is different chickens, the basis of the diet which are:

  • legumes, for example, soybeans or peas,
  • cereals, most often oats or wheat,
  • residues of processing of various crops - cake,
  • vegetables - cabbage and other juicy fruits,
  • meat and bone meal, meat or fish residues,
  • aft limestone, shell.

How many live chickens?

After analyzing all kinds of breeds and conditions of keeping chickens, you can voice the following conclusions of their average lifespan:

  • meat - 50 days,
  • Egg - 1.5 years,
  • meat and egg - 1-1.5 years.

Record indicators of longevity of chickens are recorded quite often, mostly they are demonstrated by representatives of ornamental breeds that were grown at home. Until 2008, the oldest chicken was a hen who lived 14 years, but in that year, the media began to actively inform about the new record holder - the hen of decorative breed Gannus, who lived in the town of Pyryatyn in Poltava region for 18 years.
