Breeding rabbits attracts the possibility of obtaining fast offspring, quick weight gain and good quality fur skins. The existing breeds of rabbits are conventionally divided into meat, fur or fur and decorative.

In terms of weight, domestic rabbits can be:

  • large, the weight of an adult male rolls over 6 kg,
  • average, the weight of such animals is mainly in the range of 3 to 6 kg,
  • small, it is the animals, weighing from 2 to 3 kg,
  • undersized, weighing from 1 to 2 kg.

Rabbits vary in length and quality of wool, color, growth rate and number of rabbits in the offspring. After studying the description of the breeds of rabbits, photos of the best representatives of the breeding characteristics, you can get an idea of the choice you have and find the best animals for your compound.

In the backyard conditions, rabbit meat breeds are most often bred. Such animals quickly build up muscle mass and have a good yield of dietary meat during slaughter. Part of the animals is allocated a truly gigantic size.

White Giant Rabbit

Among rabbits of giants, the breed is most known to be from Germany and Belgium, where the rabbit breeders managed to breed animals not only in absolutely white dense fur, but also in super-large sizes even in the nineteenth century. Breed of rabbits the White giant has got on the territory of Russia long time ago and over the past decades has been adapted to growing in more severe conditions than in Western Europe.

An adult individual gains a live weight of up to 7 kg, while the livestock is grown not only for meat, but also for the sake of high-quality skins.

After cutting the carcass, the rabbit breeder receives about 3–4 kg of dietary lean meat. At the farmstead, this breed of rabbits breeds well. Usually, there are up to 11 young rabbits, who are ready to go for meat after 2-4 months after birth.

Rabbit Flandre or Belgian Giant

If one is old, but not lost its relevance, and today the breed of rabbits - flandr or Belgian giant. Although animals stand out with a powerful build, and the breed itself belongs to meat animals, but thanks to the friendly nature of the animals, these rabbits of giants are often kept in the house as a companion and pet.

The history of the Flandre rabbit depicted in the photograph dates back more than four centuries. And it is impossible to name precisely the ancestors of these animals. But over the past centuries, the work of unknown breeders from Flanders has not been lost and has not disappeared, but is actively used in Europe, the USA and Russia. In modern large farms and on private farms, several lines of Belgian rabbit giants are grown.

The “smallest” ones are animals that grow up to 6 kg, and truly gigantic representatives of the breed can weigh up to 10–12 kg.

Breed animals may have a different color, but the wool is always good, thick, with a pile up to 30 mm in length.

Rabbits of breed Rizen

Giant rabbits from Belgium were famous and bred throughout Europe, but at the end of the 19th century breeders in Germany were able to talk about the appearance of their own giant rabbits. Thus was created the breed of rabbits Risen, which literally means “gigantic”.

It is the largest animal in existence today. The weight of a male can reach 12 kg and more, while not only meat is appreciated, but also thick short fur of different colors. Breed small animals have large ears, wide paws and a massive body. Because of their weight, rabbits of the Risen breed are rather cumbersome, but good-natured and intelligent.

Rabbits of breed Gray giant

The rabbits of the Belgian giant breed that appeared in the USSR after the war gave rise to new breed lines of domestic breeding. The local livestock was used to get unpretentious, hardy and numerous offspring, and the overseas guest gave the size and weight to the little rabbit. As a result, another meat breed of rabbits, the Gray Giant, was registered. This happened in 1952, and since then the rabbit breeders of Russia have been actively using the achievements of scientists.

In decent breeding of animals of this breed massive elongated body, strong paws and a large head. On average, an adult rabbit weighs from 4 to 7 kg.

Pile can not be called thick, so this breed of rabbits is not used for fur production. The color is gray, darker on the back than on the stomach.

Californian rabbits

The old time-tested breeds include California rabbits. Obtained in the southern United States at the beginning of the last century, they still show good results and are bred both on an industrial scale and on private farmsteads. Fur meat breed of rabbits was bred on the basis of complex crossing of chinchillas, white rabbits from New Zealand and Russian ermine breed. A new breed of rabbits stood out not only with a bright white color with contrasting spots on the ears, face, paws and tail, but also an excellent weight gain, fecundity and well-being. With a short torso and harmonious bones, the average weight of a California-style rabbit reaches 4.5–5 kg.

White New Zealand rabbit

The history of the breed of white New Zealand rabbits has more than a hundred years. For pure white meat animals, representatives of the White giants and local albino animals were used. The breed, even with a relatively small weight of animals growing only up to 4.5 kg, still retains its popularity due to the high quality of lean meat, unpretentiousness, early development and a large number of rabbits in broods. The breed features of the white New Zealand rabbit include: snow-white, without a hint of fur, perfect bite, wide paws and back, silver undercoat and red eyes.

Red New Zealand rabbit

In addition to the white New Zealand rabbits, there is a red variety, also used for fur and meat. The weight of strong, well-fed animals up to half a meter in length does not exceed 4.5 kg, but the relatively low weight of the carcass is compensated for by its high palatability, fertility and endurance of the breed.

The peculiarity of this meat breed of rabbits is a bright unusual color, which can vary from a brick-red shade to a rich red.

Beautiful fur, pubescent paws, compact constitution - all this makes it possible to grow red New Zealand rabbits in the open air even in fairly harsh conditions.

Rabbit butterfly

The Russian rabbit breeders have a rabbit butterfly with an original color, which gave the breed a name, which has been familiar for more than two hundred years. It was in our country with the selection work that the best results were achieved. Today, rabbits weigh not three kilograms, but almost twice as much as at the time of arrival from Britain. In addition, they are better adapted to local content.

If you look at the muzzle of the animal, you can see a large dark spot, in form resembling a moth with spread wings. This spot is depicted in the photo breed of rabbits owes its name. Other spots, already of arbitrary shape, can be seen on the body, around the sockets, and on the ears. There is also a dark line along the spine. Claws and tail light. The spots on the rabbit butterfly can be different shades from black to cream.

Some general information

Rabbits belong to the class of mammals of the hare squad, but are significantly different from their relatives: they do not change the color of the fur during shedding, the offspring of rabbits are born naked and blind. In hares, babies are born with open eyes and completely pubescent. A distinctive feature of rabbits is precocity and fertility. Breed rabbits are able all year round. On average, there are 8 rabbits in a nest, but there are also such rabbits that bring up to 16 cubs in a litter. These animals become sexually mature in 4-5 months.

Pregnancy rabbit lasts only a month. Very often, rabbit breeders are allowed to mate females several days after caul. Due to this, it is possible to have several okrols from one individual during the year and to get more rabbits (over 40), which allows to significantly increase the volume of production. The main conditions for successful rabbit breeding is the observance of sanitary and technical standards, animal health, and breeding technology.

In rabbit breeding rabbits are divided into the following breeds:

The largest breeds of rabbits: with names and photos

Giant rabbits are mostly bred by experienced breeders. Animals are quite large, they require special conditions. They demand and skins and meat.

The beginning of this breed is traced from the 16th century, from the times when large rabbits with gray fur were seen on the territory of Flanders - the Belgian giants. By the end of the XIX century, the breed was brought to Germany. Taking it as a basis, in 1937 the German breeders bred and registered the breed Deutsche-Riesen, which translated means the German giant. Among rabbit breeders and breeders a dispute often arises: some of them believe that Risen is just a larger variety of Flandre, other experts claim that it is an independent breed. Formally, the rocks are different, but very similar.

Characteristics of the breed and conditions

Currently, the breed Risen is considered the largest in the world. The body in rabbits is massive with very developed musculature, the chest is rather wide, the body is elongated, the legs are thick. Skin colors are agouti, yellow-gray, sand, dark gray, black and blue. Weight can reach from 6 to 10 kg. The meat has high taste qualities, and animal skins are valued. It is recommended to buy rabbits in breeding farms, at the age of 4 months. Producers are allowed to mate at the age of 8, and breeding males - on reaching 10 months. Animals are large, so they need to provide comfortable cages for housing. Rabbits of the Risen breed have strong immunity, but still you should not allow animals to freeze. Ventilation is needed in the room where rabbits live. In the warm season, their diet consists of green fodder and vegetables, give a mixture of cereals with the addition of vegetables. Mature rabbits, first okol should be planned when the female reaches 10 months. In the nest is usually from 8 to 12 rabbits, which the female nurses well.

Belgian Flandre - the breed of these rabbits is considered the oldest. According to one version, it is believed that this is a hybrid, which turned out when crossing the Flemish rabbits, Argentine and Patagonian breeds. The very first rabbits were brought to North America in the 19th century, where they received special recognition. In 1916, a national federation was formed, consisting of the Belgian giant breeders. Breed named in honor of Flanders, this area was part of the state of Belgium in the XVI century. It is believed that it was from this place that they came to America.

Characteristics of the breed content

Flandre rabbits are large, well-muscled, wide breasts, strong, strong legs. Large, rounded head, wide cheeks and large ears. The weight of rabbits can reach from 7 to 10 kilograms. They may be of the following colors:

Rabbits need to provide proper care: the cells need to be kept clean, animals should be fed with high-quality, balanced feed. It is recommended to do timely preventive vaccinations against infectious and viral diseases. Mature rabbits become 8-9 months. Rabbits can happen all year round, but experts do not recommend mating in the fall. At this time, the animals actively molt, and pregnancy will put additional strain on the female. Pregnant females must be fed high-quality feed and ensure that there is fresh water in the trough. The female usually bears and gives birth from 7 to 8 rabbits, in rare cases 15. If the rabbit has brought a small offspring to the first one, take the time to discard it - this is a feature of the breed.

One of the leaders

A very popular breed of rabbits is gray giant. The Flandres imported to Russia at the beginning of the 20th century did not adapt well in our climatic conditions and grew poorly. It was decided to cross these rabbits with locals. In 1952 in the Poltava region a gray giant rabbits were bred. The color of animals in color agouti, the so-called rabbit. The length of the body can reach 66 centimeters. Weight ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 kilograms. For one okol, the female brings up to 8 cubs, sometimes up to 12, which they feed well. Excellent tolerate lowering the temperature and content in the cells. Animal skins are especially appreciated.

Albino rabbit

To obtain a rabbit of this domestic breed - the white giant - the Soviet chinchilla, the Belgian and the gray giant crossed. The animal has a completely white color (albino) and reddish eyes. Body length - 60 centimeters. The weight of white giant rabbits reaches 5-6 kilograms. It has a very good quality pelt - thick fur with a dense undercoat. In the nest is up to 9 rabbits. This breed of rabbits is not recommended to keep in cramped cages. Mainly contained for fur.

Black brown

Rabbits are extraordinarily beautiful: the fur is thick and fluffy, black-brown in color, the down is slightly blue. The back and head of the rabbit are black, and the sides are brown and unevenly colored. An adult animal weighs 5-7 kilograms. The bunny rabbit brings in about 8 and more cubs. Particularly appreciated beautiful skins.

One of the best meat breeds of rabbits. No less valuable is its silver-blue fur. In 1913, the Soviet chinchilla gained fame. Breeding animals with such color engaged in France. In 1927, several individuals were brought to Russia and engaged in the breeding of the breed. Breeders for several years worked on the creation of this breed. As a result of crossing the imported chinchilla with a white giant, a Soviet chinchilla breed was obtained. Finally, the breed was formed in 1963.

According to the description, the Soviet chinchilla stands out among the other breeds with its silver-blue color and very thick fur, which in quality is second only to the fur of black-brown rabbits. The color of the breed is zonary, with uneven transitions, moire, down has a blue color. On the back of the head must be a bright wedge. • it is necessary to maintain cell cleanliness,
  • feed balanced feed
  • provide continuous drinking mode,
  • Do not allow overheating in the sun
  • reliably protect from drafts and frost.

Breeding

For the purity of the breed, you need to keep several breeding lines, you can not allow a kindred cross. Puberty in these animals occurs in 6-7 months. In rabbit chinchillas maternal instinct is very developed. Females give birth to 8 calves, are distinguished by milkiness and fertility. In the year breeders receive from 30 rabbits, with more frequent coverage, their number can grow up to 40. Males are good producers.

Rabbit french ram

The appearance of the rabbit ram breed causes people to have a spontaneous mutation, as a result of which their ears lost their usual upright position and drooped, making the animals look like sheep. A change in appearance was noted and fixed by selection. And today, lop-eared rabbits are popular not only as agricultural meat animals, but also as pets.

The ancestors of modern breeds of rabbits with drooping ears became English lop-eared. The first copies of the rabbits of the French sheep were shown in the middle of the nineteenth century in France. Unusual large animals first as a curiosity spread in their homeland, and then migrated to neighboring countries. A great influence on the breed was made by the selectionists of Germany, who as a result of a long selection received really productive fast-growing farm animals. The average weight of an adult male passes for five kilograms, and females only slightly easier.

In addition to the remarkable constitution and excellent fatness, lop-eared rabbits demonstrate high quality fur, and the color palette is wide enough, which only increases the interest in the breed of rams, and lop-eared rabbits can be seen in an increasing number of farms.

These rabbits can be kept outdoors and indoors. Some owners keep animals of these breeds in apartments.

The Soviet Marder is a rabbit, which was obtained by crossing breeds such as ermine and chinchilla. The color is brown, usually the muzzle, tail, back and paws are of a darker color. The animals are small in size, the body has a length of 50 centimeters, the girth of the chest is 31 centimeters. Adults weigh 3.0-4.2 kg. In one okrol usually about 7 rabbits. The fur of this breed is valued for its high down content.

The ears inside are painted in a lighter tone than the color at the rabbit itself, they are small, slightly rounded at the top. Fur rabbit gray-blue. The average weight is 4.5 kilograms. In the vicinity of the female is up to 9 babies. Prized for the quality of the fur, the skin is very soft with a high content of fluff.

Origin

This breed was bred in the 20s of the last century in France. She got her name for the short fur. In 1924 they appeared at the rabbit exhibition in Paris and immediately attracted attention. Appeared in a private farm as a result of intraspecific mutation in the Belgian giants.

Rabbit Breeds

A large number of rabbit breeds have no practical value, and only 15 of them have significant economic value, intended for slaughtering for meat, as well as for obtaining fur and down. They are divided into fur and down, as there is no clear scientific classification of animals. Fur is divided by hairline into short-haired and normal-haired, according to the nature of the products obtained from them into meat-fur, meat and skin.

Breeds for home breeding

In household farms such breeds are most often bred:

Includes large-sized fur animals, which are intended to receive meat and skirt products (Figure 1). The animals are strong and have such external differences: an oblong body, rounded croup, deep breast, light oblong head of medium size, wide and long ears, long, wide-set paws and a straight narrow back. Type of constitution leptosomnogo type.

Figure 1. Rabbit white giant

The representatives of this species have pure white fur without admixture of other shades, and for this reason their cultivation will be expedient for slaughtering on the skin. The weight of animals can be up to 5 kg, and the fertility of animals at the time of eating can reach 8 pups. That breed of white giant is considered one of the most common.

This is a new, highly productive species grown for meat and furs production. Individuals have a strong torso of the mesosomal type, tolerate various climatic conditions well. The animals have the following differences: the body is slim and wide, the head is small, the middle ears are straight-set.

On the back, sides and rump there is a silver-gray-blue tone of the hairline, but on the other parts of the body are painted almost pure white color with a light dusky underfur.

Figure 2. Soviet chinchilla

Soviet chinchilla unpretentious and hardy to a variety of conditions. The resulting skins are quite large, and the fur is thick and uniform. Animals are characterized by rapid growth and high-quality meat. Females have good maternal qualities. With the right feeding ration, they can feed up to eight pups at a time.

This fur species includes medium-sized meat-skin animals. They have such characteristic features: a slender, slightly elongated body, strong bones, a small head and medium length ears. Body type - mesosomal. Hair is thick, soft, have a good shine.

Females have a high level of fertility, as well as good maternal qualities, and successfully lead and feed up to eight young at a time. Males have a high vitality and are perfectly adapted to different climatic conditions of detention.

The animals are rather large and belong to the representatives of normal fur-haired rabbits. They have a long, large body, a wide breast with a small dewlap, a large, rough head with long ears, and short limbs with respect to the body. Representatives of the species belong to the leptosome body type (Figure 4).

Figure 4. Rabbit Gray Giant

Meat quality is average. Animals may have a gray hare, black, dark gray and a glandular gray color. If they are slaughtered by adults, they get large-sized skins from them. However, relative to the density of the hair, they are inferior to the skins of the white giant, Soviet chinchilla, black-brown and Viennese blue. Females are characterized by good milkiness and high fecundity (on average, about 8 rabbits are given per okol).

Representatives of the species are adapted to temperate and mild climatic regions of our country.

Representatives of this fur breed are of average size and belong to representatives of the meat-shkurkovy direction of productivity. Individuals are distinguished by a wide and compactly knit body that extends to the rump. Representatives of this type have such characteristic differences: small head, deep chest, straight and short ears, wide rounded croup, muscular and strong legs (Figure 5).

Figure 5. Silver Rabbits

Hair thick, have an unusual shade of old silver. The hair guides are black, the awn is white, and the underfur slate-blue. On the tip of the muzzle, ears, limbs and tail, the fur is darker, but when the animal reaches the age of 4 months, all the fur becomes silvery, and in the young of one month of age the hair is black. In females, there is a good fertility (up to eight pups per okol). Animals can be raised for slaughter, as they grow quickly, and meat has good dietary qualities.

  • California and white New Zealand

These are fur rocks, which were obtained by the method of selection work of American scientists. They have a strong build of Eyrisom type, the body is compactly grouped and has a cylindrical shape, a deep and wide breast, thick legs.

Figure 6. Rabbits of California (1 and 2) and New Zealand (3-4) breeds

Representatives of these breeds have a thick and elastic hairy white color (Figure 6). However, Californian rabbits have a dark shade at the tip of the face, ears and tail. Juveniles grow rapidly, and females have high milkiness. They are recommended to be used for the production of broiler rabbits meat direction of productivity, when the content with the mother up to 74 days.

This is a large breed, which is grown not only for fur, but also high-quality meat. The animals are very resistant to climatic conditions and have such characteristic properties: elongated body, strong bones, rounded head with long ears, wide chest, long strong legs, thick and lush hair.

Figure 7. Black-brown rabbit breed

Upon reaching 4 months of age, baby rabbits have a black hair color, while adults have a tint of black-brown foxes (Figure 7). The resulting skins are not stained before implementation. Fecundity of females for one okrol makes eight baby rabbits.

This is a very resilient domestic look, which has such features: thin and strong bones, knocked down a cylindrical body, medium head and wide chest and muscular legs of medium length. White downy rabbits do not have tassels on their ears (a characteristic feature of the Angora downy feathers).

Figure 8. White feather rabbits

Representatives of the white downy breed are white in color (Figure 8), but sometimes black and blue shades of fur can be observed. For one okol the female leads up to seven cubs.

About what breeds of rabbits are, you will learn from the video review.

Fur breeds include white and gray giant animals, Soviet chinchilla, silver, Viennese blue and black-brown. But since they were described above, we will focus on other common fur rocks (Figure 9):

  1. Veil-silver breed most often bred for the production of fur and meat. As a result of crossing animals were obtained with high fertility and milkiness, high meat qualities, with thick, shiny hair. The breed is adapted to outdoor stays in cages in the winter and summer. The main external characteristics include a long, dense body, a wide chest, a rounded large head with long ears and strong straight paws. The fur is thick, dark gray on the belly. The silver color appears after the first molt, and a thick black veil covers them seven to eight months after birth, that is, after the second molt. Animals are distinguished by high fecundity, good meat qualities and medium precocity. However, in the progeny, individuals with atypical fur color are often found.
  2. Butterfly - animals of white color with dark spots symmetrically located on the sides and back. Initially, they were bred as decorative, so their weight did not exceed 3 kg. As a result of crossing, their qualities were improved. The main disadvantage: animals are prone to obesity. Obese females have low fertility, while those who are fertilized and who are nursing poorly feed the offspring.
  3. Soviet Marder - short-haired rabbits with valuable soft velvety fur. Occupy one of the first places on the beauty of the skins. The constitution is proportional, the head is small and round. The fur color is heterogeneous in different animals and in each individual in different parts of the body (muzzle, ears, tail and paws are much darker). Females have an average fertility, and the resulting skins can be used without staining. However, uneven color creates difficulties in sewing fur products and reduces the quality of the skins.
Figure 9. Fur breeds: 1 - silver voile, 2 - butterfly, 3 - Soviet Marder, 4 - Russian ermine

Small species of sandpaper destination are represented by Russian ermine. These are hardy and unpretentious animals with a robust physique, medium head and erect ears. The color is white, and the ears, tail, paws and the end of the muzzle are black or brown. The weight of adults reaches 4 kg. Fecundity is good (up to 8 individuals in the litter), and meat is valued for tenderness. After slaughter, skins of various sizes are obtained that have no analogues in the quality of fur. The main disadvantage is that when trying to increase body weight, the quality of fur deteriorated.

Breeding rabbits meat breeds - the most profitable direction. Animals actively grow, gain weight, have good muscles and give tasty meat.

The best meat breeds are also called broilers. These include the New Zealand White, the New Zealand Red, California and Burgundy (Figure 10).

The meat of the highest quality animals give New Zealand white and red. They have such distinctive features:

  • Medium length, cylindrical body,
  • Wide and fleshy belly,
  • The head is wide with a slight curvature from eye to nose,
  • Rounded at the ends, erect, short ears,
  • Legs are straight, strong, hind limbs are more fleshy,
  • Pink eyes (in albino specimens),
  • Thick, shiny, soft fur,
  • The breed is early ripening
  • Animals are hardy and prolific,
  • Adults are calm and obedient,
  • Perfectly tolerate temperature extremes
  • Life expectancy is on average 5-10 years,
  • The diet requires special attention.

The most unpretentious of all meat types of Californian. Such individuals do not have excess fat deposits, are rather fleshy, differ in innate immunity and ability to adapt easily. Their live weight is slightly lower than that of New Zealand, but they gain in growth rates and are distinguished by a strong build, thick white hair with dark spots on the muzzle, paws and tail. Animals are smart enough and friendly, and the live weight of adults can reach 5 kg. Females are distinguished by high fecundity, and young stock is rapidly gaining weight.

Figure 10. Representatives of meat types: 1 - New Zealand White, 2 - New Zealand Red, 3 - California, 4 - Burgundy

Burgundy is considered one of the best meat breeds. Her representatives already at 4 months of age reach puberty. The body is muscular, covered with sandpaper with a hair coat of medium thickness of light brown color. The fur of animals does not represent special value. The females are very fertile: the female can lead up to 12 calves at a time. Animals grow quickly, have a strong body and good immunity.

Downy rocks

The group of long-haired rabbits is called downy. These include: Angora down and white down rocks (Figure 12).

Downy rocks are medium sized. Thus, the Angora mass is 3 kg, and the white down - 4 kg. Angora down is characterized by a short body with a large head and short ears, with fluffy tassels at the end. The coat is thick, silky, of various color, represented mainly by long downy hair.

Animals have a changeable character, and their body is as if covered with a hanging woolen cloak. The coat color can be both light colors (white, silver) and more saturated (havana, black, blue, yellow).
  5. Cute decorative pets of white color with blue eyes represent the breed of Hermelin. Their weight is within 1.5 kg, and in their appearance they resemble Persian cats. More details about the popular species of these animals can be found in the video.

Angora rabbit

In addition to meat breeds of rabbits, animals with thick, long or short fur, bred for the sake of down or skins, are popular. Angora rabbits belong to the down. The animals have a thick thin pile from 15 to 25 cm, and this record length is preserved almost throughout the body, therefore between the toes on the paws there are often long bunches of hair, and there are brushes on the large rabbit ears. Coloring rabbits may be different. Due to the abundance of honey, the animal seems large, in fact, the Angora rabbit rarely weighs more than 3.5 kg, to which it grows already in seven months of life.

The first information about an unusual breed reached the Europeans at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The birthplace of long-haired animals is Turkey, from where strange rabbits came first to the Old World, and then to America. If the Angora rabbits originally depicted in the photograph were a rare pet, today their down is widely used for the production of warm yarn, fabrics from it and ready-made clothes.

White down rabbit

Another downy breed of rabbits was born in the USSR in the middle of the last century. Thanks to the interbreeding of the French Angora and the native animals, the universal breed White Downy appeared. Rabbits of this breed are bred for meat and for obtaining soft silky fur.

Today, breeding continues, and at the disposal of the rabbit breeders animals have appeared not only of white color, but also blue, black, smoky animals. The animals became more enduring, adapted to growing outdoors, and the weight increased to 4 kg. If earlier the long pile of the Angora rabbits was very capricious and easily fell down, losing quality, then in today's animals the fur is much more elastic and practically does not change its appearance in any conditions of detention.

Rex Rabbit

The old German rabbit breed Rex is distinguished by extremely thick short fur, leaving the impression of a plush or sheared high-quality sheepskin. In the USSR, the history of the breed began about a century ago. Rabbits Rex, despite the ban by the German authorities, were secretly taken out of the country, were grown and gave birth to offspring in the USSR.

Rabbits, famous for soft velvety fur, give excellent meat. An adult grows up to 4–5 kg. And with a fairly light thin bones, the output of low-fat dietary meat is significant.

The pedigree traits of Rex rabbits include a large elongated body, small rounded ears, short mustache, bent down. Today, there are many monochromatic and spotty colors, diversifying fur skins obtained from rabbits.

Chinchilla breed rabbit

The breed of rabbits Chinchilla presented in the photo was named after a small animal with surprisingly soft fur of the original color. As a result of breeding in domestic rabbits, it was possible to repeat the appearance of this fur, having obtained a dense silver-gray nap with a dark base, a light, almost white stripe in the middle of a hair or a black tip.

Breed of rabbits Soviet chinchilla, obtained in the USSR in the last century, inherited valuable fur from the ancestors of French blood, but became heavier, unpretentious and prolific.

The little rabbit consistently brings up to 8 rabbits, while the adult animal weighs up to 5 kg. These are strong large animals with good health and fast weight gain.

Decorative rabbits

In recent years, decorative rabbits, which are different from those that are raised for meat and fur, are gaining in popularity, being smaller in size, friendliness, and emphasized by their attractive appearance. That is why in many animals the sweet "childish" type of face and body structure inherent in the little rabbit, remains throughout life.

Domestic rabbits are conventionally divided by the length of wool, size and color. Today, in urban apartments one can meet both ordinary large animals, for example, the rabbits of the Baran or the representative of the Angora breed, as well as miniature or even dwarf animals.

From Belgium in our country were dwarf rabbits, because of the peculiar mane deserving the name of lionheads. An elongated soft bristle is present on the neck, crown, chest and cheeks, and sometimes on the hind legs, forming fluffy “pants.” The animals have a dense build, weight not exceeding 1.7 kg and perfectly suitable for keeping a character in a room.

Dwarf Rex rabbits differ from large counterparts only in size and weight. Miniature animals are covered with a short, softest fur, small curved whiskers and weighing no more than one and a half kilograms. At home, decorative rabbits are easy to learn, intelligent and learnable. Dwarf Rex rabbits can both monophonic and variegated.

The unusual appearance of the dwarf ram rabbits of the breed became the reason for their incredible popularity among pet lovers. The animals retain the original shape of the ears and firmly knit the backbone, but it is much smaller than the usual representatives of the breed French sheep. Cute lop-eared rabbits have a calm character, do not exceed 30 cm in length and weigh about 1.5 kg. Newborn baby rabbits have upright ears, but they begin to change shape only after a couple of weeks. Among the colors of the dwarf rabbit: chinchilla, white with blue or red eyes, blue, spotted.
