These are completely different methods, each of which requires adherence to separate rules.

How to prepare for the process:

  1. Preparation of hands and tools. As mentioned above, the injection should be done in a clean environment.
  2. Choosing a syringe. For subcutaneous injections, use a small syringe. It is called insulin. Medication usually requires a little, about 1 ml, so it just fits. And the needle of such a tool is quite thin, which allows you to make the puncture less noticeable to the cat. Such a syringe is suitable for intramuscular injection, if not an oil solution is used.

  1. Backup option. If the owner is worried, it is best to prepare a spare ampoule. Accidentally dropping or crushing a bottle will not have to search for a second for a long time, testing the patience of a frightened cat. The same applies to the spare syringe.
  2. Set the fluid in the syringe. Having ascertained the inscription on the ampoule, it is necessary to fill the syringe. Dosage should be observed strictly. In no case it is impossible to prick more than the attributed rate, this treatment will not speed up, and overdosing with medicines is extremely dangerous. Before the introduction, hold the syringe in the palm of your hand until it warms up — you cannot inject the cold medicine.

  1. Company. The injection is best done with a companion. For the first time carrying out the procedure, it is difficult at the same time to fix the frightened Murka and focus on the procedure.
  2. Immediate process. The injection site does not need treatment. The skin of the cat is already protected. The only exception is hairless cats. They wipe the skin with an antibacterial cloth.

Preparing a cat for an injection

Making an injection to a cat is not easy. Especially if she had already experienced a similar procedure before. It is best not to prepare a syringe and everything you need in the presence of the "victim". Cats remember such manipulations well. Therefore, having felt once the pain from the needle, and having remembered the rustling of the packing of the syringe, the next time the cat will hide before you have time to unpack the instrument.

It is most convenient to inject a cat with an assistant. Regardless of temperament, the animal will try to escape as soon as it feels pressured. Therefore, one must fix Murka, and the second - to prick. It is extremely important to immobilize a pet, because with a sharp jerk during piercing the skin, the needle can dig deep into the muscle.

There are two ways to "tame" a cat. Try to keep her in the supine position, while fixing the paws. A towel will help the cat inject in the second way, in which the animal should be tightly swaddled, leaving the place for the procedure outside.

The “roll” of a cat should also not bite you, so stay away from his angry muzzle.

If you make an injection without assistance, lay the cat on a comfortable surface, resting his hands on the body with his forearm. Use the other hand to inject. Keep your pet should be a little tighter than we would like. If it breaks out at the wrong moment, you simply make a shot in the sofa, and the fugitive will have to search for a long time.

In any of the ways it is important to keep calm, so as not to disturb a cat, so suspecting something wrong. It is best to talk with her calm tone and iron.

Prick in withers

In order to carry out a high-quality manipulation, you need to know how to inject a cat in the withers.

This is an injection, in other words called subcutaneous. Theoretically, it can be done on any part of the cat's body, but it is customary to do it on the "mane." The cat has the least nerve endings in the nape of the cat, so the injection will be the least painful.

The skin between the shoulder blades is slightly tipped off with the fingers. The needle should be directed toward the head, along the ridge. The skin here is quite thick, so piercing it can be difficult. Do not rush and make sharp movements so as not to pierce the skin through and not put a shot in your fingers.

If the cat is too tense and the needle enters badly, it is worth slowing down, so as not to bend and in no case break it. If the tip came in gently, you can release the medicine.

With the introduction of fluid to check the skin with your fingers. If it is wet, then the needle fell instead of the subcutaneous space in the skin itself. It is necessary to deepen the tip and re-enter the drug.

With proper procedure, the hair at the puncture site will be dry.

Intramuscular injection

Intramuscular injection is often done in the thigh. Sometimes also use a place on the shoulder. This is not a complicated process, but it still requires adherence to certain rules.

The first of which - do not rush. Haste and excitement can alarm a cat. Even if she fails to escape, it is quite difficult to make an injection into a tense muscle. If the cat has already managed to chill, massage the thigh of the animal, and also try to calm the pet.

The needle should be inserted one third of the length. If the owner's hands are shaking, you can practice on a pillow or a soft toy. After several “toy” pricks, the hands will no longer tremble, and the syringe will rest more confidently in the palm of your hand.

The injection should be done slowly. Before administering the fluid, make sure that a blood vessel is not touched. Having entered a needle, it is necessary to pull the piston in a direction from the needle. If the fluid is not stained with blood, you can release it. If it has acquired a pinkish tint, it is necessary to pull out the needle by 1 mm, or shove it again.

The least painful medicines are injected into the thigh because this area is very sensitive. Before inserting the needle, you can pinch the skin a little to avoid getting the needle into the nerve column.

In the shoulder, the injection is done similarly. Before the procedure, the skin is examined to eliminate the presence of inflammation and microtraumas.

The needle should be directed only from behind. If you try to prick from front to back, you can injure bone tissue.

Safety regulations

First, the quality of the solution. There is no point in talking about the shelf life and storage conditions of drugs: everything should be qualitative and according to the rules. Secondly: only ascribed to the veterinarian, and in clear doses. Gag can be costly and the health of the animal and the nerves of the owner.

If the drug was collected in the syringe in advance, shake it before performing the procedure. If the medicine is not oily, buy an insulin syringe. For large animals, they are not suitable, and for pets more than five kilograms, take the usual.

The rules also apply to the amount of medication. For one injection, do not inject more than 80 milliliters of fluid. If it is necessary to apply large doses, for example, saline, it should be done in several stages.

The optimal temperature for a medication before administration is room.

Systematic procedures with the use of brute force can be great to undermine your authority in the eyes of a cat, so after each injection, treat your pet with a treat. This will help save your friendship with her.

After the injection of the drug, the needle should be removed quickly and not deflected from the axis - its displacement may cause pain to the animal.

After the process, you can rub a little skin in the puncture zone. And if the blood came out, wipe with a clean cloth. Within half an hour, the blood continues to perform - it is necessary to call the veterinarian and consult about further actions.

If the cat is lame on one foot, it does not matter. Soon this side effect will pass by itself. If Murka doesn’t get on a limb at all or drag it, the needle most likely touched the nerve plexus. It's not scary, but you will need vet help. He will appoint a Novocain blockade.

In conducting treatment, it is important to discard indecision. The need to help an animal should stand higher than pity for it.

Every owner should know how to properly inject a cat. This information will help to act confidently in situations where qualified veterinary care is not possible. After all, we are responsible for those who have tamed, and the responsibility for the health of pets lies with their owners.

Actions for the good

First of all, come to terms with the idea that this is a necessity. And it is extremely important for the health of your pet. And of course, do not make the choice of drugs yourself. Only the appointment of a veterinarian should be carried out unconditionally. By the way, in this case, an expert on the spot will explain to you how to make a cat a shot in the withers.

The second step is to calm down. Animals react very strongly to your emotions, so before you start chasing a cat, prepare a syringe, a blanket, in which you will wrap your pet, and take a few deep breaths. Now you can go in search of the patient.

Syringes and medicine

As a rule, the veterinarian explains in detail how to make a cat a shot in the withers. That is, you will only follow his recommendations. Prescribing injections, doctors will tell you what to take syringes. If this moment was overlooked, it is best to stop the choice on insulin. Their needles are thin and short, they will not hurt your pet much. The dosage is usually small, so the size is enough. Ask your doctor about the nature of this injection. For oil-based products, it is best to take syringes with a removable needle. In other cases, well fit whole.

So how to make a cat a shot in the withers you have to independently from beginning to end, it is better to prepare everything in advance. In particular, a vial of medication should be used only if it is at room temperature. After removing it from the refrigerator, first warm it in your palms.

Bright personality

Even before the procedure, evaluate the nature of your pet. There are among the representatives of the cat world courageous individuals who will endure any torture. In this case, the cat, most likely, will only shake paws with displeasure and leave to tidy up the battered wool. However, as among people, there are hysterical personalities who will claw, bite, and scream. That is why it is important to prepare a diaper or blanket, quickly wrap the cat and, while he did not understand anything, make an injection. The less you fear yourself, the better the procedure will be.

Subcutaneous injection

It seems to many owners that intramuscular injection is easier to perform. In fact, this is not the case. If you know how to properly inject a cat in the withers, then once again you will not have to go to the veterinarian. This does not mean that you can treat the animal on your own. But they usually bring a pet to the clinic once a day, in a serious condition - twice. In addition to this, additional injections may be required (several more times a day). Here are some of them you can do yourself.

Why exactly withers

Only at first glance, this procedure is so terrible. It is simpler to make an injection of a cat subcutaneously in the withers because this place is not too sensitive. The little kitten is raised by the mother for him, and he never shows signs of discontent. However, piercing the withers with a needle can be difficult, especially if you fall into a muscle.

But there are also physiological reasons for choosing a place. Subcutaneous fatty tissue has a loose structure and good absorption capacity. That is why large volumes of liquids can be injected into this part of the body, in particular, oil solutions. Due to their slow absorption it is imperative to use drugs in a warm form and in a small amount.

The subcutaneous fat layer has a good blood supply, which provides an excellent effect on all organs and systems. In this case, the absorption is faster than when consumed through the mouth, but slower than intramuscular injection.

Fundamental rules

  • Best of all, if the animal will sit quietly. So you are much more likely to perform the procedure painlessly. Since it is not hard to make an injection to the cat at the withers, it is possible to act alone, but it will be easier to get together. One distracts the animal, strokes and holds, and the second quickly makes an injection.
  • It is not necessary to disinfect the site of administration with alcohol.
  • Having filled the syringe with medicine, be sure to close it with a cap. Do not touch the needle with your hands. Remove the protective cap only before the injection.
  • The drug should be at room temperature.
  • The needle is inserted no more than one centimeter.

Preparation for the procedure

The most important thing is sterility, because you don’t want to hurt your pet even more.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap. After that, open the sterile syringe. Be sure to take a new one with each injection, otherwise you risk introducing infection into the wound.
  • If the ampoule was opened earlier, its contents cannot be used. Do not endanger the health of the cat.
  • Make sure you take exactly the medicine you need.
  • Open the ampoule.
  • Take the drug.
  • Expel the air from the syringe. To do this, hold it up with a needle, slowly press down on the plunger until the first drop of medication appears.

Introduction technique

We came close to how to prick the cat at the withers. The scheme is quite simple, but requires practical skills. For the first time, everything seems complicated, but once this procedure is performed correctly from the beginning to the end, you will understand that there is nothing to be afraid of.

  1. Pull the skin on the withers of the animal. Here you can not be very afraid, for sure you have already done it during the games with him, turning over the silky fur. Three to four centimeters up the skin rises completely calmly and painlessly. This will be the site of the medication.
  2. Now it's time to inject the cat. How to make this procedure less painful at home, we are trying to find out. Pulling the skin fold, press it with your middle finger to get a pocket. It is here that we will introduce the drug.
  3. It is very important to hold the syringe correctly. It should go parallel to the spine, the needle penetrates the skin no more than a centimeter. If you use an insulin syringe, then you can not really worry about it. It has a short needle, so it can be injected almost completely.
  4. This is the most crucial moment, but now you know how to prick the cat at the withers. The instruction says that at this moment the animal usually stops resisting. The needle is already under the skin, and you can begin to inject the medicine.
  5. Now the most important thing is not to rush. The slower this procedure is, the less painful the process itself. For example, 20 ml of medication is injected for about two minutes. Calculate proportion is a snap.
  6. Watch the process carefully. If the wool near the injection site began to soak, it means that you did not pierce the skin, and the medicine did not go where necessary.
  7. When removing the needle, hold the animal in your hands for several minutes, soothing it. Disinfection of the wound is not required, but if you feel more comfortable with this, take chlorhexidine at the pharmacy first.
  8. After the procedure, you need to slightly massage the injection site to dispense the medicine.

Withers and not only

We have examined in detail how to properly inject the cat in the withers. The instruction emphasizes that this is the easiest way to provide medical care to an animal that every owner can easily master. However, the place of drug administration may not be just the withers. A similar procedure can be performed on any part of the body of the animal, where the skin is quite well pulled off and there is developed subcutaneous tissue. However, the withers wins in the sense that there is the least amount of nerve endings.

Intramuscular injections

There is nothing easier than to do a shot in the withers of a cat. How to put an injection into a muscle is already a more complicated question. Usually such a procedure is handled by a veterinary nurse. However, there are cases when help is needed immediately, and the time of day or distance does not allow you to quickly call a specialist.

  • So, for intramuscular administration a large volume of the drug is not recommended. Usually it is no more than 1.5 ml.
  • Open the vial, take out the sterile syringe and take medicine into it.
  • Now it is important to determine the place for injection. To do this, slightly pull back the paw and feel the muscle. She rolls under her fingers. The best place is the middle of the thigh.
  • Be sure to feel the bone with your fingers. It is important that, by determining the place of injection, the host does not get into it with a needle.

Technique of injection

This procedure is more difficult because it is painful. However, in your power to do everything right, then the discomfort will be short-lived.

  • You need to take the syringe in your hand so that you do not intercept it.
  • The movement itself must be fast, sharp and precise. The slower the needle enters the muscle, the harder it is. Often animals are very patient. This is explained by the fact that their pain threshold is higher than that of a person. But do not abuse it.
  • The correct needle direction is at the back of the paw. It is entered at an angle of 45 degrees, not more than 1 cm.
  • After the puncture is made, you should not hurry. Each ml of solution will take at least 3 seconds. In addition, each subsequent ml is introduced more slowly, already for 6-8 seconds.

If the cat is very tense, try to calm her down before the procedure. Iron and place a plate with a treat in front of her.

To master the technique of injections is not difficult, it is enough to perform them once in practice. However, do not abuse your skill. Prescribe drugs, dosage and duration of treatment should only a veterinarian. Following his recommendations, you can perform some procedures at home, on your own. By following the instructions given, you will not harm your pet and will quickly undergo a full course of treatment.

What are injections and what are they for?

An injection (injection) is one of the most common methods of administering medicines by passing a syringe with a needle under the skin. This method contributes to the instant penetration of the drug into the necessary areas and tissues of the cat's body. There are several types of the presented procedure:

However, if the doctor has prescribed intravenous injections for you, then the best solution would be to undergo the procedure directly at the veterinary clinic in order to avoid unpleasant, sometimes rather pitiable, consequences. This type of shots can only be trusted to a knowledgeable person., who has repeatedly encountered similar methods of treatment.

How to make an injection yourself?

In other cases, you should learn how to properly prick the cat at the withers for several reasons:

  • treatment in most cases is designed for at least several days, so it will be quite problematic to go to the clinic every time,
  • there may be cases where an injection will need to be done urgently without delay,
  • after the cat recovers, will trust you much more and see that you do not wish her evil,
  • A pet's bad state of mind can only get worse during the trip, which can later cause complications,
  • in a cozy home environment the kitten will feel calm and confident, so the process will be almost painless.

Preparatory stage of the procedure

Before putting a shot in the cat's withers or intramuscularly, it is worth knowing a few simple rules that will protect both you and your cat from unnecessary stress and trouble. The main points include the following:

  • Observance of 100% purity and sterility: the first thing to do is to ensure that the place where the manipulation is planned is clean,
  • in addition, you should rinse your hands properly, and in no case touch the needle used,
  • self-medication may expose you to unnecessary risk and create problems: when treating cats, you can not use medicines in any form without consulting a doctor’s prescription,
  • always remember - syringes are disposable, and with further use can cause infection,
  • open the ampoules with medicine only before use, or store in separate syringes with the necessary dosage in the refrigerator,
  • The best solution is to buy an insulin syringe, which is much smaller than usual with a thin needle. The exception is potent drugs, prick which should be in large doses,
  • the preparation should be approximately room temperature before administration, especially if it was kept in the cold,
  • put the syringe upright with the needle upward and gently release the air bubbles so that a small stream of medicine is released,
  • regardless of whether the cat should be injected at the withers or thigh, be extremely careful - the cat can move sharply at the moment the needle falls under the skin, which will only aggravate the situation.

In addition to the above rules, do not forget to maintain a positive attitude and calm throughout the process. Cats have a pronounced empathy, so they easily feel all the changes in your emotional state.

Features and algorithm for injection under the skin

Subcutaneous injections for cats are the easiest and most painless way to perform injections, which can even be learned by newcomers in the field of medicine, in particular, veterinary medicine. In addition, it is the best treatment option for many diseases. The subcutaneous fatty membrane is permeated with a whole system of vessels, through which the medicine will instantly enter the required medium.

You can make a subcutaneous injection to the cat at the withers, or in a separate part of the fold under the knee. Withers are the part of a cat's torso between its shoulder blades.

In cats there are almost no nerve endings, so the most powerful drugs, in particular antibiotics, are better for stabbing there. Meanwhile, be as careful and careful as possible: the skin here is very dense, therefore if the needle is inserted incorrectly, it can easily bend or break at all. Putting an injection to a cat in the withers subcutaneously will again be quite problematic.

Reassure pet

Many people wonder how, without much effort, to inject, if the cat has a fighting character and she is ready to do everything, just to dodge. First of all, you should follow your behavior: if you are very excited and afraid to do something wrong, the same mood will be transmitted to your kitten.

Try to tune in to a positive train of thought and act clearly, without delay, without leaving the cat a single chance of resistance.

Put the cats injections at the withers

If you understand the general requirements and recommendations, you can see in detail how to properly inject a cat in the withers by yourself. The algorithm of actions is quite simple, however, each stage is extremely important for the whole procedure. For a better understanding of how to prick a cat at the withers, see the following list of actions carried out in a clear sequence:

  • prepare the place on which this manipulation will take place: choose a solid, stable surface, thoroughly clean from any kind of contamination and cover with a sterile napkin or simply a clean blanket,
  • to reassure the pet as much as possible, making it clear that everything is good and there is no cause for concern,
  • It is better for one cat not to be injected into the withers: one person will hold the cat so that it doesn’t instinctively twitch when the needle is inserted, and the other will conduct a direct injection,
  • gently pull the animal's skin at the withers: this is necessary for ease of administration of the medicine, as well as to avoid getting the needle too deep under the skin,
  • the needle must be inserted at an angle of 45 degrees along the spine of the kitten, and not perpendicular,
  • with a smooth movement, the needle should be injected 1-2 cm inwards; in the case of an insulin syringe, the needle should be injected into the cat at the withers for the entire length of the needle,
  • it is desirable to leave quite a bit of medicine at the bottom of the syringe, especially if there were air bubbles there - this will once again protect against infection,
  • quietly remove the needle while still holding the skin at the site where the injection was performed.

Try to treat your pet as gently and carefully as possible, even if he managed to scratch your hands in the process of injections, treat him with a favorite delicacy. If you doubt your ability, you can easily find a video on the network on how to properly inject a cat in the withers.

Injections intramuscularly: important information and recommendations

There are cases when individual drugs veterinarians recommend stabbing not subcutaneously at the withers, but only intramuscularly. Such cases, in particular, include drugs that are poorly absorbed when administered under the skin, or cause severe pain. In addition, a similar method is used when administering intravenous injections, but there is no opportunity to travel to a veterinary clinic for their implementation and the lack of effectiveness of injections under the skin in the withers.

Special features

In addition to the generally accepted rules for injecting drugs by injection, the intramuscular injection has its own unique features:

  • an injection is made in the most fleshy part of the paw of the animal - the back of the thigh,
  • exclusively at an acute angle towards the thigh itself,
  • the needle must enter a maximum of 1 cm to avoid damage to the fragile paws of the paw,
  • need a clear fixation of the injection site, which is associated with particular painfulness of such procedures,
  • The drug should be administered gradually, slowly, to allow it to disperse into the appropriate tissues,
  • the muscle should be in a completely relaxed position: to do this, you can massage the skin area for the intended injection, bend the paw and fix it in such a state as possible.

In case of uncertainty that you will be able to carry out the procedure correctly, in compliance with the rules and requirements, it is more rational to go to specialists for help.

Possible consequences and methods of their elimination

Despite the fact that the injection is not so significant and significant as to cause serious consequences, from the point of view of medicine, this is minimal damage to the skin and blood vessels, therefore should be ready for any eventuality.

Regardless of the method of injection, in the withers, subcutaneously or intramuscularly, a small amount of blood may appear on the cat's skin. If its flow does not stop, or it becomes more and more, immediately contact a doctor.

If we talk about pain and irritation after the injection, they are insignificant and soon pass. Do not be surprised if the cat will behave strangely and try to attract your attention in every possible way, so that only it will be pityed and comforted - the acting skills of the cats will not be occupied!

Reasons for concern

If the kitten constantly jerks with his paw while walking, or occasionally jumps from one to another - do not be alarmed, this is absolutely normal. This is due, primarily to the fact that intramuscularly in most antibiotics and antispasmodic drugs that cause similar reactions.

However, if the cat drags his foot on the ground and cannot step on it at all, you should contact the veterinarian. The main reason may be damage or rupture of the nerve bundles, which requires immediate treatment with novocaine and other medicines.

Also pay attention to any changes in the behavior and appearance of the cat: even the slightest swelling and irritation on the skin is a signal that notifies the owner that something has gone wrong.

The main thing is to discard sentimental feelings, pity and insecurity in their actions. Undoubtedly, such manipulations are quite painful and unpleasant for both the kitten and its owner. However, if you correctly perform a shot in the withers or intramuscularly, the health and well-being of your beloved cat will be much better in the near future. Show your pet your indifference to his condition, the manifestation of care and unlimited love, and he will answer you the same.

How to make an injection to a cat

Learn from the video how to make an injection of a cat subcutaneously and intramuscularly. Step-by-step instruction.

How to make an injection to a cat yourself? - this question worries caring owners and it is not surprising. After all, this, simple at first glance, manipulation requires certain skills and knowledge.

A well-done injection is a pledge not only for the effective and correct action of the medicine, but also for the absence of complications, the minimum discomfort from the procedure for you and your pet.

I hope that the information below will help you to make an injection to a cat correctly and practically painlessly. It is also helpful to know how to give a cat a pill.

An injection or injection is one of the methods of injecting drugs into the cat's body, by piercing the skin with a needle and syringe, which helps the drug to penetrate into certain tissues.

Injections are:

  • intradermal,
  • subcutaneous,
  • intramuscular,
  • intravenous
  • intra-arterial
  • intraosseous.

What you need to know before you inject a cat

  1. Do not self-medicate! Make injections to your cat only as prescribed by a doctor, strictly observing all prescriptions, doses, etc.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly before the injection. But even with washed hands it is impossible to touch the sterile needle of the syringe.
  3. The injection site can not be treated with an antiseptic, and you must make an injection with sterile syringes and use a new syringe each time! Syringes and needles are disposable, do not forget that.
  4. The skin at the injection site should be healthy and free of inflammation.
  5. If the volume of the medicine does not exceed 1 ml and the medicine is not oil-based, then insulin syringes with small needles can be used. In other cases, use syringes with a volume of 2-5 ml.
  6. If the medicine was stored in a refrigerator, then it should be heated to a temperature of 37 degrees before use.
  7. Before you take medicine in the syringe, be sure to check the name of the drug and its expiration date. Draw only the required dose into the syringe.
  8. Do not mix several drugs in one syringe. An exception is the veterinarian's instructions.
  9. Put the medicine in a syringe just before the injection, and until the moment of use, cover the needle with a protective cap.
  10. It is better to entrust oil solutions to stabbing the doctor, but if this is impossible, then be careful. Before you enter the oil solution intramuscularly, you need to make sure that you do not fall into the vessel. To do this, after inserting the needle, you need to slightly pull the plunger of the syringe toward you and if blood flows into the syringe, you need to change the injection site. Oil entering the bloodstream is deadly to the pet.
  11. Before you give a shot at least intramuscular, even subcutaneous, release the air from the syringe. Lift the syringe vertically upward so that the air bubbles inside it rise and release some medicine from the syringe. If the air still remains in the syringe, then you can simply not inject the medicine until the end, leaving a little in the syringe with air bubbles.
  12. All your movements must be accurate and correct. Do not stretch the procedure of injection, lisping with a pet, discard doubts and pity. Remember that you give an injection to a cat for the good and for the sake of health. Be calm, do not forget that your condition is transferred to the pet. If a cat with character, actively resists, then injections should be made in a pair, so that your assistant firmly fixed the pet.
  13. If there are no contraindications, then a little food or delicacy can be given to develop a positive attitude and reflex before the injection. Do not shout at your pet, be a kind, affectionate and caring owner.

In this article, we will consider subcutaneous and intramuscular injections to cats. Firstly, these are the most common types of injections that are made to cats. And secondly, the other types of injections can not be done without experience and especially at home.

Subcutaneous injection of a cat

The subcutaneous fat layer is rich in blood vessels and has a loose structure - all this provides a more rapid penetration of the drug than, for example, when applied through the mouth.

Cats subcutaneous injections do in the area between the shoulder blades, withers (nape) or in the fold area on the knee. For the so-called "flammable" hypodermic pricks of the withers - the safest place, so the risk of pricking "not there" is least of all and there are practically no painful sensations from the puncture.

Cat intramuscular injection

Some drugs are poorly absorbed when given subcutaneously or cause severe pain. If it is necessary to deposit the drug, that is, to create a depot of the drug (a kind of supply) so that the medicinal substance is slowly released into the blood, thus maintaining a constant concentration of the drug over a long time. There are medicines that can only be administered intramuscularly. Also, cats are given injections in the muscle when a more rapid effect of the drug is needed, but intravenous administration is impossible, and subcutaneous injection is ineffective.

The cat has blood after the injection

Do not forget that an injection is, albeit a micro, but still a trauma to the skin, as well as blood vessels. If the blood appears slightly, just a couple of drops, then you should not worry. But if the blood is flowing in large quantities, then you should apply cold to the bleeding site for no more than 15–20 minutes and immediately contact a veterinarian if the bleeding does not pass or increases!

Limping in a cat after an injection

Sometimes the cat may limp after an injection, but this is not a problem. Usually, limping is a reaction to painful injections of antibiotics or antispasmodics. Especially sensitive and tender cat nature can even exaggerate the painful pricks and show their acting qualities, yes, do not be surprised, it happens. The discomfort passes quickly enough and requires a visit to the doctor if the lameness does not go away within a couple of days.

Dilution of the drug with water for injection, saline or novocaine can reduce the discomfort of painful injections, but you should not experiment on your own; consult with a veterinarian before any dilution of injection medications!

Try a light massage of the pad, which limps.

If the cat does not stand on the foot or begins to drag her after the injection, you should immediately contact your doctor for help, as the nerve bundle is quite likely to be touched and the treatment of this condition with novocaine or other preparations is necessary.

First of all, it should be understood that they differ only in quality and volume, but have the same mechanism of action. If possible, use variants with rubber bands on the piston, which soften its course and provide a more smooth introduction of the drug.

To make an injection to the cat at the withers you can use:

  • insulin syringe - has a thin needle, a detailed scale of divisions, but has a small volume (up to 1 ml) and is not suitable for oily preparations,
  • injection syringe - has different volumes and thickness of the needle, and is especially suitable for large pets with a body weight of more than 5 kg. For cats, it is recommended to choose the minimum volumes in accordance with the prescribed dosage. It is also possible, when prescribing, for example, 5 ml of an injection, to take a needle from a syringe with a volume of 2 cubes and make it a prick.

The needle must be sterile and new for each injection, since after the first use microscopic agnails appear on it that make it difficult to re-insert the needle. If you need to enter the drug from one syringe, you should use those that are sold with spare needles in the kit (they have caps of different colors, which allows you not to get confused during use).

If several drugs are prescribed for treatment at once, a separate syringe should be used for each, unless otherwise specified by the doctor. In no case mixing of solutions is not allowed. In this case, the probability of oxidation of active substances or precipitation is high, which will negate the effectiveness of each of them.

It is recommended to pick up the solution by 0.5-1 division more than the specified norm, after which the needle is raised upwards with a needle and knock on the plastic case, but in no case should the needle fall in order not to disrupt its sterility. As a result of such actions, air bubbles will rise to the spout and it will be easy to get rid of them by pressing on the piston. For subcutaneous injections, it is important to remove as much air as possible from the syringe, but the entry of a small vial will not cause significant harm. Air entering during the injection process is fatal only with intravenous injections or droppers, if it is a rather large bladder.

Terms of use of drugs

Before you enter the solution, it is important to check the name on the vial of the drug with the prescription of a doctor and carefully read the instructions. Even if the medicine is prescribed by a veterinarian, you need to check:

  • Is the preparation suitable for an animal (for example, some medicines for dogs are toxic for cats) and for subcutaneous administration,

Important! For some drugs, subcutaneous administration is unacceptable, but only intravenous, which is usually due to the risk of tissue burns and the formation of necrotic foci.

  • what temperature of the solution should be during the administration (for some drugs, heating to 38-39 ° is required, others should be cool),
  • availability of instructions on the speed and method of administration (some solutions need to be diluted or injected very slowly),
  • the need and duration of shaking the vial before filling the syringe to obtain a uniform content structure.

The instructions for the drug always indicate how the powder or liquid should look: if this information does not correspond to what is in the vial, the drug cannot be used. So, for individual funds, storage is provided with strict observance of the temperature regime, therefore, they should be purchased only in checked vetapteks or directly from a veterinarian.

If one ampoule is designed for several applications (within several days), then its contents should be collected in several syringes and, having closed needles with caps, store them in a refrigerator.

Important! The shelf life of some drugs is no more than 10-12 hours after opening the ampoule, so the option of storage in a syringe in this case will not be relevant. For all other drugs, collected in a syringe, the shelf life in the refrigerator should not exceed 72 hours.

In one injection, you can enter no more than 30-60 ml of the drug solution, depending on the weight of the animal. If the treatment provides for large doses, then you need to enter them for several receptions and in several places withers along the spine.

How to make an injection

Making an injection to a cat is not a very easy procedure, especially if he will not test it for the first time. It is advisable not to carry out all the preparatory manipulations in the presence of the "patient", since animals remember the procedures that cause negative associations well. One day, after experiencing pain from the needle and remembering the rustling while unpacking the syringe, the pet will immediately hide next time.

Pet preparation

The most convenient way is to involve an assistant in the procedure: one person will hold the cat, and the second - to prick. At this point, it is very important to immobilize the animal, because in the case of a sharp jerk at the moment of piercing the skin, the needle may pierce deep into the muscle. This can be done in two ways:

  • fix in the supine position, holding the paws,
  • Tightly swaddle in a towel, leaving an area for the procedure open.

If you have to carry out the manipulations without any help, you need to lay the animal on a comfortable surface and with the forearm of one hand rest against the body of the pet, and with the other hand - carry out the necessary manipulations.

In any case, it is important to behave calmly, so as not to create additional stress for the cat. It is better during this process to stroke the cat and speak in a tender voice, without showing your excitement.
