Habitat: Representatives of this type of fish are found throughout Indo-Pacific (Indo-Pacific), as well as seen from the reefs of East Africa (East Africa), Japan (Japan), Samoa (Samoa), New Caledonia (New Caledonia) and the Great Barrier Reef (the Great Barrler Reef) at a depth of 10 to 40 meters. The blue surgeon is one of the most popular sea fish all over the world. Juvenile representatives, as a rule, can be found at a depth of 1 to 3 meters behind the reef in the branches of Pocillopora eydouxi corals, in which the fish find shelter.

Habitat: Blue surgeons live on coral reefs at the depth of the water course, where they rest in narrow holes and crevices protected from predators such as tuna and tiger perch. In addition, this reef provides the fish with algae for meals.

Aquarium size: The minimum size of an aquarium required for a single blue surgeon is 285 liters, as this fish really loves to swim. You also need a large number of "living stones" to be able to hide in the branches of corals.

Care: As mentioned earlier, blue surgeons are popular representatives of marine aquariums, despite the fact that they have a reputation for being quite gentle and prone to parasitic infections, which makes this fish not suitable for beginner aquarists of marine aquariums. An important condition for the purchase, is the correct acclimatization of the new fish, about which there is a lot of controversy about the need to quarantine purchased blue surgeons. Many owners of marine aquariums are advised to approach the purchase of this fish with great care and accuracy. You need to choose the fish that does not look exhausted, does not have a thin physique and has a length of more than 7.5 cm.

Water parameters: These fish must be maintained in aquariums that have previously undergone a full cycle of preparation (with a fully tuned biobalance). Water must be very clean and saturated with oxygen.

Nutrition:
For adolescents, the diet consists primarily of plankton, as they grow older they become more omnivorous and begin to use both meat products (meat of shrimp, mussels, squid) and algae from the walls of the aquarium, as well as lettuce leaves, dry food for herbivorous fish. Young representatives of this type of fish must be given live nauplii of Artemia. It is important to note that the algae growing in the aquarium play an important role in the nutrition of blue surgeons and if their natural growth does not meet the full needs of the fish, it is necessary to regularly replace live stones with new ones that are overgrown with large amounts of algae. Good nutrition allows the fish to maintain color, strengthens their immune system and improves overall health. Feed should be a small amount of feed several times a day. It should be noted that poor nutrition is one of the main causes of death of the fish.

Behavior and combination: Blue surgeons can get along with many representatives of reef fish. Ideal for reef aquariums, they do not bother or damage invertebrates. However, you should not forget that in the presence of two fish of this species, the volume of the aquarium should not be less than 380 liters. It is also worth being prepared for the aggressiveness of the fish for their territory. Therefore, the greater the volume of the aquarium, the less aggression is manifested in these beautiful fish. In its natural habitat, the blue surgeon is a lonely fish that forms into harems exclusively for the mating period.

Reproduction: The blue surgeon reaches sexual age in the period of 9 - 12 months. It is very difficult to distinguish between a male and a female. Spawning occurs in February or March in the evening. During this period of time, the color of the male changes from dark blue to pale blue, and in the female the dark line becomes gray. The male becomes aggressive and cares for itself. The blue surgeon's egg is very small, less than 1 mm, and its maturation time is 24 hours.
There is no data about successful mating in home aquariums.
