An allergic reaction to dry food in cats is more common than in dogs. You must be able to distinguish between food allergies and intolerances of certain foods. Allergies to food in cats have multiple symptoms, but most often it is irritation and other skin problems. Food intolerance leads to nausea or diarrhea, without provoking the reaction of the animal organism, which is peculiar to allergy. In cats, food intolerance is similar to the human body's response to intestinal upset or diarrhea from eating fried or spicy foods. But it is possible to avoid this, however, as well as allergies, finding out the cause and eliminating the ingredient from the feline diet.

Allergies to cat food: symptoms, causes

Allergies in cats can appear for various reasons, but most often it is food. And regardless of what it eats - natural or dry food. Studies have shown that certain ingredients contained in dry food, and generate an allergic reaction. In cats, these are some allergens.

  • Bull meat
  • Ram meat
  • Seafood.
  • Corn.
  • Soy products.
  • Milk products.
  • Hen.
  • Wheat and more.

Based on this list, it is easy to guess that the products listed most often are a significant part of the cat's diet. This dependence is not accidental. Dry foods include a large number of additives that contribute to inadequate digestion. This happens because some proteins are more antigenic than others, and they are identical in shape. That is why the frequency of occurrence of allergic reactions directly depends on the number and duration of their exposure. In addition, in addition to the products listed, the animal may have its own preferences, such as fruit, which can also cause allergies.

Food allergies

To distinguish an animal suffering from food or any other type of allergy is not easy in terms of its physical characteristics. However, there are signs of allergy in cats for food, symptoms that indicate the presence of an animal reaction. If you are allergic to food, he may have a very strong irritation on the skin that cannot be removed even with the use of steroid preparations.

This type of disease is very tricky, this is due to the fact that it manifests not unexpectedly, but in connection with the prolonged use of a certain type of dry food and the accumulation of a harmful substance in a feline body. It is difficult to find this substance and exclude it, because an animal can eat its usual food for several years without any signs, and then at one point food allergy to cats' food, symptoms of the disease that never manifest themselves, will be expressed. Allergies are especially aggravated in cats aged 12 months.

An allergic reaction can occur on any dry food, but most often it occurs when eating food with protein content. The problem can also be exacerbated when changing feed. According to statistics, the use of even the most high-quality and expensive product in some animals also expressed an allergic reaction. Pay great attention to what your cat eats, the only way to identify the disease in time and change the food of the animal.

Symptoms of food allergies in cats

How does cat allergy manifest? Symptoms are similar to signs of other types of disease. The main manifestation is itchy skin. In addition, miliary dermatitis and much more can occur.

Allergies in cats for dry food have the following symptoms:

  • The cat may lose hair and dandruff.
  • The cat constantly rubs against the wall, chews paws and itches.
  • Experiencing aggression or, on the contrary, total apathy.
  • From the pet's coat comes an unpleasant smell.
  • Excessive perspiration in the armpits.
  • Sores and combed red spots may appear on the pet's body.

Such symptoms can inform not only about the occurrence of allergies, a number of other diseases manifest in the same way.

Possible diseases

  • Disrupted endocrine glands.
  • Fungal or bacterial infections.
  • Atopy.
  • Reaction to flea bites.
  • Hypersensitivity to parasites of the digestive tract.
  • Avitaminosis.
  • Cat Scabies (notoedric mange).
  • Seborrhea.
  • Deprive and stuff.

Therefore, it is necessary to urgently contact the veterinary clinic for an accurate diagnosis.

By the way, the nature of the allergic reaction can influence the localization of stains:

  • The appearance of spots in the back and tail zone most often informs about the reaction to flea bites.
  • When reacting to the cat litter, the paw pads are peeled off and the paws are swollen.
  • Ears swell when allergic to medications, it is also possible the appearance of sores in the superciliary arches.

Diagnosis of food allergies in cats

For effective treatment, it is necessary to establish the type of the disease. If an animal has typical signs of an allergic disease, such as itching, blemishes, bald patches, poor hair condition, etc., it is necessary to consult a specialist as soon as possible. You can also examine the pet yourself and make sure that there is an allergy to food in cats. Symptoms, photos of skin diseases presented in the subject literature, compare with the existing lesions. It is especially important to establish the fact of the presence or absence of parasites, such as fleas, lashes, and so on. It will not be superfluous to conduct additional processing of the animal from fleas and ticks.

The reaction to insect bites can be detected only after a blood test. When a diagnosis is established, the room should be disinfected, special droplets or a flea collar should be prescribed to the animal, the damaged areas should be treated with ointments.

Diagnosing a disease is a simple procedure; everything is complicated by the fact that other diseases can provoke similar symptoms, and at the same time a cat can suffer from other diseases. It is very important to detect and cure others before the diagnosis of an allergic disease is established. Only after a thorough check and treatment can you proceed to the procedure for identifying food allergies.

Cats, unfortunately, do not put allergy tests, such kits are available, but they have a very limited number of allergens. In the process of communication, the veterinarian will ask a few general questions: about nutrition, whether plants are available for the animal, medical preparations or cleaning products, how hygiene procedures, treatment, etc. are carried out.

Allergies to cat food: symptoms, treatment

After the diagnosis of food allergies has been established, an exception should be used. When based on the results of the survey, components that stimulate an allergic reaction were installed, they are completely eliminated from the diet of the animal. When using steroid and antihistamine drugs and fatty acids, you can get a short-term effect, but you can only resolve the problem by eliminating harmful ingredients. If you are allergic to cat food, symptoms how to treat? Only two options are possible - a special pet food with allergies or self-cooking for the cat.

homemade food

With a lure from time to time, you can experiment and add new foods, tracking the body's response. For example, if there is an allergy to food in cats, the symptoms do not appear when eating potatoes with a rabbit, you can try to enter into the diet of chicken meat. If there is no reaction in a couple of weeks, you can give the beef. If there is an allergy, respectively, it was provoked by beef, and the product should be excluded. In a similar way, you can enter and exclude different products, setting allergenic.

When self-cooking there is a significant drawback, it is very difficult to achieve a balanced diet, the right ratio of the right ingredients, mineral and vitamin substances, therefore, the diet should be prepared with a veterinarian.

Please note that in some animals, an allergic reaction to new ingredients may not appear immediately, but after a long amount of time.

Conclusion

Every cat owner should remember that when an animal has a pronounced reaction to a particular product, it is necessary to be especially careful with the choice of diet. Study the composition of dry food, watch the reaction of the body. Conduct regular processing of ticks with injections, which are made in veterinary clinics, to protect the pet's access to medical and disinfectant preparations and so on. If you follow these simple rules, you can avoid signs of allergy and save the health of your beloved cat.

The essence of allergies, causes and their classification

Allergy is a complex reactive process in a cat's body, when a normal and perfectly safe substance is perceived by something foreign-dangerous. This substance is called an allergen.

Immunity against allergens is triggered in such a way that the “harmful” substance is not immediately excreted from the body, but at first an inflammatory process is triggered around it. Further, a substance such as histamine is released into the bloodstream, which, acting on certain cellular receptors, becomes the culprit of the entire spectrum of clinical manifestations of the reactive state. A feature of all such reactions is the individual set of allergens and the unpredictability of symptoms.

The causes of allergies can be absolutely any substance:
  • food (each cat has its own individual allergens),
  • chemicals (shampoos, powders, cleaning and detergents, etc.),
  • dust, mold, plant pollen,
  • medication
  • cat litter fillers,
  • saliva and waste products of blood-sicking insects and skin parasites,
  • the fur of other animals, dandruff or other secrets of the glands,
  • own body cells.

Allergic symptoms

Regardless of the type of allergy, common signs of an organism's response to allergens are:

  • skin redness or skin rash of various localization,
  • itching, visible scratching, balding, swelling of individual parts of the body,
  • sneezing, discharge from the nose and / or eyes,
  • peeling pads, eczema in the interdigital space,
  • dyspnea,
  • vomiting
  • sometimes fever,
  • possible swelling of the respiratory tract,
  • anaphylactic shock (in very rare cases).

An allergy in a cat can manifest itself in a single symptom, or it can be a whole symptom complex of several phenomena. Reactions are noted both immediately after the interaction with allergens, and after some time (the diagnosis is more difficult than usual).

Symptoms in various types of allergies:

  • food (allergic to food in cats)
  • skin rash,
  • severe itching, often not cured even by corticosteroids,
  • hair loss
  • miliary dermatitis (rash in the form of millet grains),
  • occurs at any time of year
  • diarrhea or vomiting,
  • relieving symptoms if you put a cat on a half-starved diet.
  • infectious
  • "Flea-parasitic"
  • local skin reactions
  • mandatory presence of cutaneous blood-sucking parasites,
  • hives,
  • foci of inflammation due to an associated bacterial infection with intense scratching.
  • chemical
  • contact dermatitis,
  • interdigital eczema (after walking on the floor washed with detergents, for example),
  • itching, hair loss (after shampoos),
  • respiratory symptoms (after inhalation of gaseous or powdered chemicals).
  • respiratory
  • contact
  • the reaction develops directly at the point of contact with the allergen,
  • local skin reactions (urticaria, pruritus, redness and swelling).
  • autoimmune
  • leaf-shaped pemphigus,
  • systemic lupus erythematosus,
  • nervous disorders (myasthenia),
  • progressive polyarthritis,
  • autoimmune anemia of the hemolytic type (the breakdown of red blood cells).

The main signs of allergies in cats can be seen in the photo.

Features of the diagnosis of allergies

The diagnosis "allergy" can only be made by a veterinarian after a personal examination and interview with the owner of the animal. This disease is very successfully masked by many other infectious and internal non-communicable diseases, therefore only a specialist will be able to differentiate one from the other.

As a rule, cats do not conduct allergy tests. The process is quite expensive and not always informative. Usually performed under general anesthesia, as Enter animal up to 20 allergens intracutaneously without additional effort impossible. Substances that make up the anesthesia come into contact with reactive test allergens, showing a false local reaction. Those. The test shows an allergy to something that really is not.

There are also no special tests for baleen pets, and in practice they use human test kits. Given the characteristics of the course of allergic reactions in humans and in cats, the likelihood of false results is also very high.

Determination of the source of allergy is carried out exclusively by experiment by exclusion. In this case, from the environment of the cat, all potentially allergens are consistently excluded, until the true cause of the increased sensitivity of the organism is identified. This method works well for food allergies.

With seasonal allergies, the source of the reaction is often not sought at all. If it is noticed that the signs of hypersensitivity to something appear once a year for a certain period, then it is enough to give anti-histamine preparations for this period until the allergen disappears on its own after this period.

Allergy Types

Before you begin treating a cat, it is important to understand what type of allergy it has. When visiting a veterinarian, a pet takes all the necessary tests to determine the ailment.

When a mustache is allergic to feed or other foods, it is extremely important for the host to understand which component to exclude from the diet. Quite often, an animal is allergic to protein. The most allergenic products include chicken, eggs, milk, cereals, pumpkin, carrots, and beets. A common phenomenon in cats is food allergy to a certain brand of food. Understand that the animal has an allergic reaction to the product, will succeed in such symptoms as: diarrhea, vomiting, constipation.

Non-food allergies can also be quite dangerous. In chetyrelapogo often reveal an allergic reaction to the filler tray. Flea allergy occurs due to insect saliva ingested by a bite. It is important to know that a flea can bite a cat up to 200 times a day! When a pet scratches the bite spots, it only aggravates the situation, since it releases biologically active substances, provoking flea dermatitis.

Upon contact with the allergen or after a certain period of time, the cat develops symptoms. The table below shows the various signs of pathology, based on the type of allergy.

It must be remembered that the treatment of pet preparations will not give the desired effect, if not to prevent further contact with the allergen. If the pet has food allergies, then hypoallergenic feed is temporarily introduced. The owner adds to the diet of the animal new products and monitors the reaction of the four-legged. Find out what to treat a cat is best with the vet. In addition to the diet, a specialist may prescribe steroid and antihistamine medications.

Contact and respiratory allergies in cats (the symptoms and treatment in this case are different) require the introduction of additional measures. It is important to exclude dangerous medications and contact with household chemicals, to which the animal may be allergic. In addition to the main treatment, the owner should try to clean the house more often and avoid the appearance of house dust.

Home treatment for flea allergy involves the use of specialized sprays, a collar and lotions. It is important to clean all the carpets, pillows and the baleen house from fleas.

For allergies, treatment involves the use of shampoos that reduce inflammation. It is important to add antibiotics during the treatment period so that they protect the animal from infections and fungi.

In the process of treating pathology, veterinarians may prescribe the following drugs:

  1. Antihistamines. It is best to use them for the prevention of seizures. It may be Chlorpheniramine, Pipolzin, Dimedrol, Hydroxysin, Peritol. Means during treatment relieve irritation and inflammation, have a sedative effect.
  2. Steroids and Cortisone. A veterinarian prescribes such drugs in the treatment of an allergic reaction to pollen.
  3. Vitamin B7 and fatty acids. They help to overcome itching, seborrhea and dryness. The use of steroids for this form of treatment is not needed.
  4. Antiallergic sprays containing aloe and oats are also effective.
  5. Shampoos with hydrocortisone can achieve a quick result.
  6. Ointment with hydrocortisone. They actually have no adverse reactions, as they are not absorbed into the blood and are actively used in the treatment process.
  7. Intramuscular injections. Пипользин, Бравегил и Дексафорт. Препараты помогают избавиться от аллергических реакций, но имеют противопоказания.

Prevention

Для того чтобы предотвратить появление аллергии и дальнейшее лечение необходимо обеспечить любимцу качественный уход. It is important to feed the pet only with fresh and high-quality feed. Periodically treat the cat's hair with ointments for fleas and ticks. Carefully inspect the wool after a walk (if the four-legged goes outside).

It is recommended to clean the apartment regularly and clean the cat's house (as well as carpets, sofas) from dust and wool. Keep chemicals out of the reach of the cat. If an animal develops a disease seasonally, then for the purposes of prophylaxis it is necessary to give it tablets prescribed by a veterinarian. When the owner noticed that the mustache became ill after taking medicine or food, it is necessary to exclude this component from the diet.

How and what to treat

Cereal grains contain the substance - gluten. That it causes a special reaction. When you start an allergy treatment based on a food reaction, you should give a new feed to a cat that she has not eaten yet.

New feed let's about 4-6 weeks. Until that time, until the signs of allergies. For example, lamb meat with rice in Hills feeds - Prescription Diet Feline d / d can be successfully fed to a cat that has gastrointestinal disorders due to food intolerance.

Bought a new cat food? Do not give a lot at once, stepwise, a little bit on the background of the usual. Thus, it will be possible to determine the inadequate response of the body to a specific food.

Do not spoil the cat delicacies and a variety of food additives. Her food should be natural.

If possible, do not use air deodorants, coloring and powder substances in the presence of a cat. If you poison the apartment from cockroaches or other insects, the cat should be temporarily transported to another room.

Perhaps you still have any difficulties with the definition of symptoms, or so, from what all the same started allergies, then use the method of elimination. Stop feeding the usual feed, go to the other. If it does not help, check and not from fleas, or from a new detergent. Call the vet in the end.

How does an allergy manifest itself?

The manifestations of allergic reactions in pets are no less diverse than in humans. The most common option is watery eyes. With severe allergic reactions, eyes do not just water, they begin to fester. Symptoms in this case are similar to manifestations of conjunctivitis.

Allergies in cats can manifest themselves in the form of hair loss. Peeling and drying of the skin may begin. Such a manifestation is most noticeable on the pads, in the ears and on the nose. Often there are also those typical for people, signs like swelling, itching, redness. Outwardly, allergies in cats look completely different. Photos of unhealthy animals, which are often flashed on social networks, clearly demonstrate this. But there are not only individual manifestations, but also common characteristics. The cat seems depressed, not quite healthy. She has no sparkle in her eyes, wool fades. The animal as a whole looks deeply unhappy.

Often, allergic reactions are accompanied by fever. And symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose, combined with the absence of other signs of a cold, almost always indicate that a seasonal allergy has begun in a cat.

Why do allergies occur?

In fact, for some reason the pet develops allergic reactions, too much like with a person. Allergy sources are the same as in humans, although, of course, there are specific ones.

Most often an allergy in a cat occurs:

  • on specific products or feed,
  • for household chemicals used in the apartment,
  • on drugs, vitamins and nutritional supplements,
  • on house dust,
  • on plant pollen, for example, indoor plants,
  • for the presence of skin parasites - ticks, fleas,
  • for cosmetic and therapeutic shampoos.

The cat's body may react to a lot of allergies. For example, on the wool of another animal, filler for a tray or flea drops. To understand exactly what caused the onset of allergy in cats is quite difficult. But without eliminating the allergen, any treatment will not be very effective, that is, after the end of the medication, the pet will begin a relapse.

What is allergy?

Allergic reactions of pets are divided into two large groups:

Accordingly, the first includes all allergic reactions caused by the fact that the animal eats. The second group includes all other sources of allergies. Their list is truly endless, because everything can cause ill health. For example, a cat may have an intolerance to the flowering of a certain sort of geranium, or the pet will begin to sneeze as it walks on the floor, washed with some sanitary means.

What else could be allergies?

Allergies in cats, the symptoms and treatment of which depend on the source, that is, the allergen, are further subdivided into narrower groups. Veterinary medicine identifies the following types of allergic reactions in animals:

  • contact,
  • chemical,
  • parasitic,
  • household,
  • seasonal.

Before starting treatment, the doctor tries to identify a potential source of an allergic reaction. You can independently try to determine the cause of allergies in cats. Symptoms, photos and descriptions of which can be found in the veterinary reference books, can help with this. It is necessary and watch the pet. For example, if the nature of an allergic reaction is not related to food, the symptoms of pathogenesis increase as one approaches its source.

How does food allergy manifest itself?

As a rule, under the food means allergies in cats for food. Rejection of a certain brand of ready-made pet food is the most common type of allergy. However, this group of reactions includes not only intolerance to the finished feed, but also a reaction to vitamins, any additives, for example, activating the growth of wool.

Symptoms of food allergies in animals is not much different from their manifestations in humans. The main signs are skin rashes, dry mucous membranes, itching, redness. Pet can feel sick. In severe cases, nausea turns into vomiting. This is characteristic of a strong reaction, when the cat's stomach does not fully accept, rejects the food eaten. There may be fever, along with thirst and hair loss.

In general, allergies in cats for food is similar to the manifestation of a strong diathesis in a child. The only significant difference is the loss of hair in pets, due to a rash on the skin with the formation of crusts and the fact that the animal is constantly combing or biting these parts of his body.

How does contact allergies manifest?

The manifestations of contact allergies are many times less than food. It is much easier with this type to notice what exactly is allergic to cats. Symptoms and treatment always depend on the cause.

Usually, contact types of allergic reactions manifest as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes. But this does not mean that other signs are excluded. Symptoms are directly dependent on what caused the reaction in the body. For example, if a cat's rug is washed with a powder or is treated with a chemical agent that the body does not perceive, then the appearance of skin rashes, dandruff and itching is inevitable.

How does household allergies manifest?

Household allergies - a large group. It includes all the causes of the body's defensive reactions related to the conditions in the apartment, but not related to chemical means, colors or food. That is, we are talking about dust, materials used in the interior of the home and other such things. For example, almost always pets have an allergic reaction to dust accumulating in places difficult to access for cleaning or remaining after cleaning of carpets.

Manifestations of household allergies are similar to contact. With the only difference that the pet shows asthmatic signs. The animal constantly coughs, from the side it is obvious that the cat is hard to breathe. A voice vulture may occur, audible when the pet meows. In a dream, with this kind of allergic reaction, cats often snore.

How does chemical allergy manifest itself?

How allergic cats manifest themselves to chemical agents depends on exactly what and how the animal came into contact. The most common allergens are special parasite shampoos, cosmetics for animals, home and building chemicals. That is, if the cat inhaled with vapor of paint during the repair work, then the reaction of its body belongs to this group of allergies. In the same way as the reaction to the treatment of wool with any drug.

Symptoms may be cutaneous, respiratory and internal. Signs of allergies from the internal organs when reacting to chemicals are diarrhea, which turns into diarrhea, fever, redness of the eyes and dry mucous membranes. On the skin, a rash appears, resembling a human urticaria. On the part of the respiratory organs, symptoms such as cramping, whistling sounds when exhaling and coughing are characteristic.

How does parasitic allergy manifest itself?

Fleas, ticks, bed louses, bedbugs and other blood-sucking parasites are frequent causes of allergies in the cat. How to treat this type of protective reaction of the body depends on the source of the allergy. The first thing to do with a parasitic form of allergy - to identify the source and destroy it.

The symptoms of such defensive reactions are not diverse. These are severe itching, red blisters on the skin at the site of bites, loss or loss of appetite. With an extremely high sensitivity of the body appears and increased body temperature.

How does seasonal allergy manifest itself?

Seasonal allergies in cats that do not leave the apartment, are quite rare. In order for a kitty who never visits the street, symptoms of a seasonal allergic reaction appear, it is necessary to bring its source to the house. That is, such an allergy is possible, for example, in the event that fallen poplar buds, a lime blossom, birch earrings or something else stick to the master's shoe. However, seasonal allergies are not uncommon among cats walking on balconies or accompanying their owners in harness and on leashes.

Signs of these allergic reactions are the same as in humans. That is, the pet's eyes turn red and tear, they sneeze, the nose is clogged with snot. The specific manifestations of seasonal allergies include reddening of the skin of the ears and its peeling. The skin in the ears becomes very hot.

If such a cat has an allergy, than to treat it, the question is irrelevant. All therapy is reduced to taking drugs that relieve symptoms and facilitate the well-being of the pet.

How are allergies treated?

Treatment of any pathogenesis in a pet begins with a visit to the veterinarian. Allergy is not an exception. Of course, therapy can also be carried out independently. But it should be started only when the vet confirmed that the cat is allergic. Many diseases peculiar to pets, in their initial symptoms are similar to allergic reactions. For example, infection with worms is manifested in much the same way as food allergies in cats. Therefore, a visit to a veterinary clinic is indispensable.

The treatment of allergies itself depends on what caused them, and includes two main points:

  • eliminating the source of the reaction,
  • taking medication.

The most difficult thing in treating the body's immune responses is determining the cause of their appearance. The treatment of certain types of allergic reactions requires medical supervision. For example, allergies, accompanied by strong edema of internal organs or pronounced states of asphyxiation.

What is included in therapy?

Any therapy begins with a diagnosis. If allergies are suspected, the veterinarian performs an animal blood test and, based on the result, determines the course of treatment and the type of medication.

Treatment of allergies in cats may include the use of:

  • antihistamine drugs
  • anti-allergic sprays and similar products,
  • ointments,
  • injection.

Often, veterinarians use steroids and cortisone-containing drugs in therapy, for example, in treating pollen allergies.

What medications are used?

The use of antihistamine medications is the foundation on which allergy treatment in cats is built. Most often, veterinarians resort to using such drugs:

Внутримышечные инъекции требуются в тех случаях, когда проявления аллергии чрезвычайно остры или же имеют спазматический характер и их нужно быстро устранить. Для уколов пользуются такими препаратами:

Для заживления кожи и устранения зуда обычно врачами рекомендуются мази на натуральной основе с содержанием экстрактов алоэ. However, the ointment does not consist solely of herbal ingredients; it will not be possible to replace the preparation with an agave leaf. As a rule, most ointments used in the treatment of allergic reactions, are due to the hydrocortisone contained in them.

Often in therapy, doctors resort to injections of vitamin B7 and prescribe supplements with fatty acids, in addition to the main treatment course. This is necessary to overcome such manifestations as peeling of the skin or dandruff, dry mucous membranes, stratification of claws, loss of hair.
