How do pets sleep?

Euthanasia of animals is carried out only in two cases:
1. Severe incurable disease: cancer, kidney failure, etc.
2. Injuries incompatible with life.

In each of these cases, the prognosis of the veterinarian is unfavorable, the animal definitely awaits death. The owner only needs to decide: he will spend the remaining pet time next to him, watching the torment, or ease the fate of a pet and put it to sleep? The sleep procedure is quick and painless. It is best carried out at home, so as not to cause additional pain to the animal.
The procedure itself:
1. Anesthesia The doctor intramuscularly injects a sedative drug to the pet (most often Propofol). Within 10 minutes, the brain is completely turned off and the animal falls asleep tightly.
2. Sleep. For cardiac arrest and respiration, an injection is made with sodium sulfate.
Euthanasia is complete. Now the animal can be buried on its own or order cremation.

Sleep and cremation of animals - humanity or betrayal?

Often, the owners of terminally ill animals cannot take these steps. They feel like traitors, turning to veterinarians for such services. But in reality, the rejection of euthanasia is human egoism. For a short time spent with a dying animal, the owner condemns him to terrible agony. Rejection of cremation is often, in general, associated with some incomprehensible beliefs. Remember! When ordering the pet to sleep, you show mercy to him, and by cremation, you give real peace.

Is pet cremation necessary?

Cremation of pets is practiced all over the world. It involves the burning of the body of a pet with the placement of dust in a special urn for further storage or disposal. This form of posthumous sedation has many advantages:

  • You can not worry that the grave will be destroyed. Dust can be dispelled or stored in a secluded place in a house or apartment.
  • Full legality of the process. The self-burial of an animal’s body may impose a fine. According to the legislation of Russia and the veterinary-sanitary rules, burial should take place in places strictly designated for this purpose.
  • No negative impact on the environment. Cremation is an ecological process and restores the natural balance.
  • Saving cash. A place in a pet cemetery is much more expensive, which makes cremation more accessible.

The vet examines the animal and the final decision is made about the need to sleep.

Introduce substances for anesthesia, depression of consciousness, stop the lungs and heart. One or more drugs may be used.

Lulling animals

First, the veterinarian examines the animal and discusses the possibility of treatment with the owners, if there is no hope of a positive outcome of the disease, then begin to sleep the animal.

Depending on the individual factors and the state of the animal, the sleep can take from 5 to 30 minutes.

Sleeping animals consists of several stages (stages go from one to another and can be a single intravenous injection).

In the first part of sleep, the activity of the central nervous system is suppressed with the aim of anesthesia. There is no pain and no adequate response to stimuli, but reflexes are usually preserved.

In the second part of the animal's sleep, the inhibition of the nervous activity increases until the respiration and the heart stops, or the respiratory and cardiovascular centers are blocked.

Usually, the respiratory function stops first, and after 3 to 25 minutes the heart stops, but it can be the other way around, but after the heart stops, breathing disappears very quickly.

Sometimes at the onset of clinical death, the agony lasts 10 to 20 minutes - while the animal does not feel anything - the brain does not work, but because of the automatism of heart contractions, rare respiratory movements continue, there may be convulsions.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to prevent such events and influence them, because the automatic abnormal work of the heart does not respond to any medicinal substances. One thing is for sure - animals do not suffer and do not feel anything at all; the brain is dead.

What drugs are used to put animals to sleep?

For lulling animals use permitted means for general anesthesia and muscle relaxants. We consider the names here to be inappropriate, since these are medical specifics, and for those interested we can recommend any pharmaceutical reference books.

Sleeping animals at home and in veterinary clinics is carried out in the same way.

If you have questions, ask them to the dispatcher.

Sleep dogs and cats

In those cases when there is no sense in treating a pet, and it becomes unbearable to look at its torment, there is a need for euthanasia. Euthanasia is the name of a painless sleep of an incurably sick animal. This is primarily a morally difficult decision for the owner of the animal, often the owners feel guilty for this act. But if the pet is very bad and the treatment does not help, then perhaps the best option would be to sleep.

Many diseases of cats and dogs occur chronically, cause only torment to the animal and end with euthanasia. Therefore, in veterinary practice, euthanasia is a very common procedure.

For many owners, a pet is also a friend for the whole family, and especially for children. The decision about euthanasia is not easy for the owners, but if the life of the animal only brings suffering, there is no other way out.

Remember that the last word on the conduct of sleep is only for you, and the doctor can prescribe it only on the basis of medical indications.

Vet Board

The issue of euthanasia is certainly difficult for the owners. If you are hesitant about putting a pet to sleep, here are a few examples that will help you objectively assess the condition of your pet and make the right decision.

  1. An animal suffers from a chronic or incurable disease, but you cope with caring for the sick and can provide its treatment.
  2. Your animal is conscious, orientated in space, understands what is happening around, can carry out not heavy commands. Controls urination and bowel movement (in case of diseases of the urogenital system and intestines).
  3. In the chronic course of the disease, your pet may have both improvements and sharp deteriorations, similar to the acute course of the disease.

You yourself must determine whether the animal can withstand the disease, and you watch and take care of its pain.

Sometimes the decision about euthanasia can be changed. For example, if an animal is sick and the doctor has prescribed medication, deterioration may begin after they are taken. You can not distinguish the difference between the disease and side effects from the drug, so that in case of any deterioration, it is better to consult a doctor. In such cases, changes in the dose or method of use of the drug can improve the situation and the animal will recover.

Many severe diseases are too expensive to treat. In such cases, the decision to euthanasia can be affected by a greatly reduced family budget and the threat to your financial security. In this case, the owners often blame themselves, but it is better to discuss everything with the veterinarian and weigh the situation from all sides.

The procedure of evatanzii cats and dogs

Euthanasia is a very humane and painless procedure. Next, the standard procedure for putting a cat or dog to sleep will be described; if you don’t want to know about it, you don’t have to read further and you can call us right now.

  1. The dog (cat) is given the drug in high concentration and it simply falls asleep within a few seconds. The death of an animal comes quickly and painlessly. Sometimes you can hear barking, screeching during drug administration. After the introduction of the drug, cardiac arrest and all systems in the body. Already after death, one can also observe convulsions, muscle twitching, animal feces. But this all happens in an unconscious state and not from pain, but already as the response of the organism, to the cessation of the supply of oxygen to the brain.
  2. Before the procedure begins, the doctor will discuss with you your wishes about being present with the animal when the cat (dog) is euthanized, or you can say goodbye to it after death. The same decision must be made about the dead body of the animal.

Care for seriously ill animals at home

It is necessary to create the best and comfortable conditions for a chronically sick animal. Encourage all actions that are hard for him, praise if the pet has eaten or drank. If in doubt about the diagnosis or treatment, discuss this with your veterinarian. In such situations, every little thing can be important.

With euthanasia, you can lose not just a pet, but a beloved family member. If you are having a hard time, you can find forums and communities where you will be supported.

You can find more information about euthanasia and answers to additional questions by contacting your veterinarian.

Do not hesitate! Remember - the earlier you call the vet, the faster your pet will become easier.

Indications for sleep

Carefully read the basic indications for the procedure. This will help avoid the fatal mistake and really help the animal.

The first in a series of testimony is old age. Often, old people, along with the general deterioration of the body, more acutely manifest chronic diseases, and sometimes develop new ones (for example, a malignant tumor). However, the age of the dog or cat itself does not oblige the owner to interrupt the life of the pet. It is worth doing this only if you see from the results of the examination that the animal will not tolerate treatment.

A serious injury that prevents you from leading a full healthy life and is not curable is the second cause of euthanasia. Such injuries include limb fractures due to car accidents, falls from a height, as well as ruptures of internal organs due to a strong blow.

The third significant cause of sleep is congenital abnormalities in a puppy or kitten, which with age will interfere with normal life and will not allow you to grow up healthy and happy.

Finally, the fourth indication for euthanasia is an infection of an animal with a particularly dangerous disease, such as rabies.

Remember that no one except you can decide to put to sleep or save lives. Approach this question responsibly. It is highly advisable to consult a veterinarian first.

Drug lulling animal: how it happens

At the moment, there are two options for sleeping:

  • the introduction of barbiturates
  • anesthesia + a drug that affects the muscles, heart or respiratory system.

The first technique is as follows. The animal is introduced into deep anesthesia by administering a large amount of the drug. In this state, it is left until consciousness is turned off, and the muscles do not come to full relaxation. The final stage of the procedure is the shutdown of all life support systems. Most often for this purpose they use "Thiopental sodium", "Propofol", "Diprivan". This method is considered the most humane and painless.

It may happen that the desired barbiturate is not in the veterinarian’s arsenal. In this case, suitable two-step procedure for sleep. The first part involves the introduction of the animal into ordinary anesthesia. After the pet falls asleep, they inject “Lidocaine”, “Ditilin” or magnesium sulfate. "Lidocaine" in large doses leads to cardiac arrest, "Ditilin" relaxes all the muscles of the body, and magnesium sulfate blocks the respiratory center. When properly carried out, the procedure is absolutely painless and helps the pet to die out calmly and without suffering.

IMPORTANT!Do NOT use these drugs to sleep on your own. Without anesthesia, the mentioned medicines cause severe torment of the animal.

Sleeping cats and dogs: are there any differences

In general, there are no big differences between putting cats and dogs to sleep. The only thing for a large dog is that the amount of the drug can be increased. Cats quite a bit of means for the introduction of anesthesia. The composition of medicines and the sequence of the procedure for cats and dogs are the same.

Sleep aggressive dogs

In the framework of this issue we will separately consider the problem of aggressive dogs. Many owners, desperate to raise an obstinate animal, come to the vet asking to put the dog to sleep. You should know that this is the wrong decision. And any adequate doctor who does not pursue profits should refuse in such a situation. In addition to the obvious unethical nature of such an act, there are other objective reasons for refusing:

  • if the dog's aggression is caused not by rabies, but by the complexity of the character and characteristics of the breed, then this is definitely corrected by a good course of dog training,
  • eating a healthy young animal only at the whim of its owner equates to ill-treatment of a pet and may have administrative consequences,
  • in case of a complete loss of credibility of the animal, the owner can take care of his transfer to specialized dog services, where the dog will find a worthy use and will give an outlet for aggression, in extreme cases, you can contact the nursery.

Euthanasia of animals in the clinic: the procedure of the procedure

It’s just that no one will hold a cat, dog or other pet to a master, of course. Euthanasia of animals is carried out after a thorough examination of the pet and only when it is impossible to help with other methods. The procedure in this case is as follows:

  • examination at the veterinarian, after which the doctor gives an opinion with a recommendation to sleep,
  • signing the written consent of the host to the procedure, at this stage you can also immediately decide on the disposal of the body (self-organization of cremation or burial, or by the clinic),
  • carrying out the procedure
  • body removal.

The procedure itself lasts no more than 20 minutes. The owner is allowed to stay close to the animal before putting him to sleep. As soon as the pet falls asleep, you should leave. This is because euthanasia of cats and dogs is a difficult procedure for the owner of the animal and can cause psychological trauma.

Another couple of words about the inspection. To rule out a medical error, we recommend that you pass the examination at several veterinarians. Sometimes it happens that one doctor prescribes euthanasia, and the other knows how to cure the disease and prolong the life of the pet.

Believe me, your four friend's life is worth it to fight for and visit several doctors. In the end, he has fully devoted this life to you. Treat this with respect.

The cost of euthanasia of animals in the clinic and at home

The price of sleep consists of several components:

  • place of procedure (apartment or clinic),
  • animal weight
  • the nature of further activities with the body,
  • region of residence.

At once we will say that in the capitals the cost of euthanasia is somewhat higher than in the regions. This is understandable. Prices here start from 1000 rubles. So, sleeping a cat or a dog weighing up to 10 kg in a clinic will cost you 1000-2000 rubles. For every 10 kg add 1000 rubles. That is, a dog weighing 50-70 kg will be put to sleep for 5000-7000 rubles.

Providing a home service will take another 500-1000 rubles out of your wallet. This amount includes, as a rule, the departure of the veterinarian and a preliminary examination.

Removal of the body and its cremation may be included in the general check or offered as an additional service. On average, the cost of transporting a corpse is 1000-3000 rubles. depending on weight. The price of cremation on general conditions is about the same - 1000-4000 rubles. and also depends on body weight. If you are very attached to a pet and want to conduct an individual cremation with the issuance of dust in the urn, get ready to pay about 1.5 times more.

Not a fact, but it is possible that when self-exporting the body, you will be required to pay for its storage in a special refrigerator at the veterinary clinic. Обсудите это с врачом заранее.

Подводя итог…

Уход животного из жизни – всегда мучителен для него самого и любящей семьи. Если вы живете в загородном доме на собственном участке, то обычно с этим проще, особенно если речь идет о кошке. Pet before death, as a rule, leaves his home or finds a secluded place in the courtyard, hidden from prying eyes, where he dies quietly.

In the urban environment, in apartments, such a scenario is almost impossible. Therefore, in order to avoid unnecessary suffering of the animal and the psychological trauma of the owner, we recommend using the euthanasia service. But this decision should be deliberate.
